Hi Guys,

Having a problem with my new HTPC/future gaming build. Specs are:

Silverstone GD07
Gigabyte Z97X-SLI
i7 4770k
16GB TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 2400MHz
SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply
120GB Samsung EVO SSD
4TB, 3TB & 2TB SATA

Here is an snippit of the user manual to help the information below.

The following was performed with nothing but the bare essentials connected.

I cannot seem to get the machine to POST if any RAM is in slots DDR3_2 & DDR3_4 (Channel A). It doesn't matter what stick(s), it won't POST. DDR3_1 and DDR3_3 (Channel B) are fine and the machine boots with 8GB. I've tested all the sticks in slots 1 & 3 and the machine boots perfectly each time. However nothing will POST if any of the stick(s) occupy slots 2 & 4. This means I can use 8GB max and the other 8GB is effectively unusable. Does this point towards a motherboard problem? Everything is brand new but the i7 was bought off the MM and the previous owner had it at 4.4GHz so I'm pretty sure the CPU is okay.

I also can't seem to get any output from HDMI ( have not checked settings in BIOS but assumed it would just work!?) but VGA is fine.....

I'm about to pull the trigger on a replacement one as I need this working ASAP. Do you guys agree it's almost certainly a motherboard issue?

Thanks for the help :)

Check the socket for bent pins, check the board isnt warped from an over tightened cooler etc.

any bios updates out? if so flash to latest version

if its still not booting from slots 2 4 then check cpu cooler isn't too tight and check cpu socket for any bent pins

take care when looking, not to damage any

Thanks for replies guys. Originally there was a Raijintek Pallas cooler one but it was a massive PITA when it came to changing around the RAM so I just have the stock cooler on at the moment. As such it's not over tight. BIOS has been updated to the newest one, it made no difference. I don't think there are any bent pins but my friend is convinced a few are bent. I might get a few more techy friends to take a look and see if they think any are bent. Is bent pins are likely cause of this?

Thanks. Looks like I'll be ordering a new motherboard then. Been reading that a lot of Gigabyte motherboards are having serious issues with all 4 dimm slots being filled on Z87. I might try a different brand just in case the issue is still present in Z97

I've had another look at it this morning and one or two of the pins are clearly bent. I've tried to fake a few photos but they are not very clear. Would you guys say this is the problem?

If they are bent then yes that is the problem. You can try straighten them out but you have to be very gentle with it. Someone with experiance might be able to help you.

if its a gigabyte board then id rma to be safe

you can straighten them with a magnifying glass and a fine sewing needle but take care not to mess too much as they simply fatigue and snap off without warning, then you'll need a new board

I want my PC up and running by the weekend so I think I'll but another board and RMA this one. I've got a full 1150 Z87 set up as a gaming PC up stairs (4770k , Z87X-D3H, 8GB 1866) so everything could be tested individually to be 100% certain but I think it would take too much effort to dismantle my gaming PC over the weekend when I could be out enjoying the sun!

Thanks for all the help guys, appreciate it :)
