Where do you buy your furniture from?

We need a bit of an interior revamp, but furniture and cabinets (etcetera) can be so expensive. I've found This Place, which looks reasonable. I like the stuff in Cargo, but I can't help feeling that they are massively over-priced.

Does anyone have retailers to recommend?

I got my Dining Table and chairs from the place you linked and its decent enough. Got it in the christmas sale, £250 plus postage reduced from £730 (DFS style discounts!) Someone bought a similar table and chair set recently in the Images of items topic in GD although it was from a different shop.

Apart from that most of my other 'main' furniture has been bought from Argos and the like so its nothing special and will likely be replaced as and when required.

Wel got out garda sofas and a hardford range of furtinure from next, solid when built, sofas are firm as we wanted, actually liked it all, got quidco online after picking fabrics in store, and money off for paired ordering.

Some of our other stuff is from ikea, mostly the kids stuff. They tend to do that well.

lots of ikea and argos tat in our house.
although the bed is solid pine from a reused place in our local town. (was apparently like new when the GF got it)
and our TV unit is solid oak that I ordered off an ebay seller but had them modify and paid decent money for it.

We recently got some lovely mango bedroom furniture (wardrobe. tall boy, 5-chest drawer, bedside cabinet) for a great price from http://www.cheaper2buyonline.com/we...emcode=123&productarea=2&groupid=1&rangeid=12

They are on Ebay too (where we first saw their products), but if you go directly, we found it works out cheaper (even though they charge a delivery cost per item, no discounts for multi-purchase).

The above are built to last a lifetime, solid mango wood throughout including the drawer bases and cabinet backs, a massive step up from our old Argos "Malibu" furniture!

Thanks chaps! I think we're in a similar position, where we want to replace the cheaper things we bought when we were starting out with better quality pieces that will, hopefully, last for decades.

We actually have quite a few things from Homebase/Argos (depending on which is cheaper), the Strand collection being a particular favourite (sideboard, display cabinet, coffee table, tv stand... they seem to have increased their prices by at least 25% since we bought however). Most of that range look more expensive than they are i.e. we get positive comments about them and are pre-built rather than the usual flatpack you would associate with the chain.

Few items from World of Pine (dvd/cd racks, bookcase, mirrors...)
Recently started shopping at Ikea too, good for cheap items.

Got a few random hand-me-downs as well.

Worst thing I think is that we don't have a totally consistent theme i.e. the majority of our items are oak or oak finish but e.g. we have a much lighter shade kitchen table, nest of tables, shelving tower etc. Nursery has white furniture throughout (cot, 2x chest of drawers, storage unit, tub chair etc) except for a cheap Maple wardrobe we got a couple of years prior and now looks out of place :( I used to reckon theming was overrated and I would just buy whatever I wanted for practical reasons as long as it looked smart, but now I think you can do a lot worse than just buy a full set from the same range even if you aren't totally convinced by all the pieces. In an ideal world I would replace the wardrobe in my son's room with a white one.

currently it is ikea, but its crap and i hate it, so flimsy, all draw bottoms eventually give way.

going to buy proper solid stuff next time round.

What do you keep in them - bricks? I've had the fronts knocked off a couple by removal men, but never had any other issues with them. Obviously solid wood will be a lot more sturdy, but it will be a lot more expensive for those of us who don't know master carpenters.

As a minimum IKEA, their stuff is actually thought out and if you compare it to the likes of Argos you will notice a huge difference in quality. Of course if you can afford it, solid is always best.
