Your biggest hardware muck up

Watercooling - filled system up, looked ok, switched on - lots of gurgling - forgot to put one of the blanking plugs into one of the gfx cards block - spilled collant into the psu that was below it.

Fortunately - it's only took the psu out.

Only something you do once!

shush you! we all make mistakes. :p

My motherboard that caught fire was an ASRock Extreme 4 Gen 3 :p

It was also awful for overclocking, the SATA controller was terrible, it would put the system into boot/restart loops, I had a cold start bug, I had an issue where the PC wouldnt shut down, the USB 3.0 ports would only work in legacy USB 2.0 mode etc etc...

Guess what problems went away when I replaced it with an Asus P8Z68-V Pro? :p

Had a Hiper Type R 580w psu blow up (literally, smoke and flames, change of undies!!) and took out a 2 week old DFI socket 939 motherboard. So much for reviews back then saying it was a very good psu!!

I had the same board and psu, it's the reason why I signed up here (my first thread lol). Was having constant BSOD problems and random restarts so I switched over to a P35 DS4 and boom :D:D Took out half my system though :(

Couple of REALLY stupid things i have done in the past.

First hardware muck up.

i remember running one of my CPUs with a custom heatsink...i forgot to remove the thin plastic film cover that protects the base of the cooler from scratches before its installed..today they put "Remove before use" on them but this one was just clear lol.

Weird thing is,I had it on for over a year,Never had any negative effects..temps always remained good.

Second hardware much up.
When i was really young, and got my first PC i was messing around at the back of the system and do you guys remember those old PSUs that had a Voltage selector/switch on the back?...well i switched it to the other setting to see what it would do...Yup,It blew the PSU and i seen smoke.

Again,I got lucky with this..it only killed the PSU.

Most recent one for me I guess was my first watercool build, I connected the tubes and leak tested everything, the next morning I go to mount the waterblock to my motherboard when I realise the waterblock mounting plate sitting right next to me :o

Obviously the mounting plate sits between the waterblock and tubing and therefore there was no way of getting this on without starting over which put my build back a few days as I had to cut the tubing and order more

Click on my sig for the project log thread and you can see the mistake in pictures :p

It hardly spontaneously combusted :p

Killed a 1TB harddrive after cleaning my computer with a hoover once. Not sure what happened but it never worked again after i cleaned my comp.

Cutting off tops of heat pipes from cpu cooler to make it shorter so it can fit under the desk, temps went from 30 to 80 got another one and realized I didnt have to cut them

Couldnt get a new PC I was building to do anything. After removing and reseating of stuff I forgot the heatsink/fan on the CPU. That Athlon CPU started smoking and left a purple burn mark. It was dead. Brand new never used CPU fried.

Not so much a hardware blunder but I bought a 3dfx Voodoo 1 when they first came out in the mid 90's. I plugged it in, set up the cables inculding the pass through to the main video card (the first 3d cards worked as an accelerator to you video card rather then being a standalone card) but I just couldn't get it to work. In the end I returned it my mate got one a week latter and it turned out I hadn't installed the driver!

Got some new RAM delivered a few years ago and swopped it over on a Saturday morning after have a few too many beers the night before. Stupidly left the power on to the motherboard when I did it. RAM and CPU survived, but I blew the motherboard and the GPU.

well thats three of us now... :p

Make that 4. :p

Except I fried the motherboard as well as the PSU. And the PC wasn't mine, I was 'fixing it' for a friend. Needless to say I informed them I had found what was wrong with it and they needed a new motherboard.

Playing with my second Asus maximus gene z97 board, and a crucial 256 gb m.2 card, tried everything to get it to work, and wondered if I had fitted it the right way around, turn it over, and it fitted the slot, so figured I would try it..... Turned it on, and the card started to smoke. Good bye £100, board lived and have a pleater 256 working in it fine.

Nice twist, I asked crucial about warranty, and they told me that the card was not covered within the uk, as it was a grey import, will never use that company again, and now shop at OC.

Second one, I dropped my ipad that was fitted with a lifeproof case, while working on my boat at the marina, local diver recovered it for me from 6 meters down, 20 mins later, press the button, and it worked perfectly and still does.
