In acme's chair.
I haven't seen one of these threads since I arrived here to ruin motors with my ill informed spew, and it seemed like a good idea to make one. :)

What was your first car?

Optional questions:

- How long did you keep your first car?
- Were you sad to see it go?
- What did you replace it with?
- Any fond or amusing memories of it you would like to share?
- Did you crash it? How badly? :p

My first car was and is as I'm sure you can tell from my signature, a VW Polo 9N. Sadly it is the 1.2 6 valve 55PS version and has no optional extras, not even electric windows or air conditioning.

Looking to sell it soon and I will definitely be sad to see it go, but it is definitely time to move on. The "creature comforts" of its replacement, including things as basic as electric windows and a fuel computer, will vastly overshadow this sadness however. :p

As for fond memories, frequent late night drives to nowhere in particular with a close friend of mine after I just got it, the novelty of being able to go anywhere whenever we wanted was a fantastic one while it lasted. Experiencing the difference between the standard worn out suspension and cheap 165:70:14's and AP sports coilovers with premium 215:40:16's for the first time was also amazing (and uncomfortable). She is back to her stock config now however.

And no I haven't crashed it and I have only had two near misses. One due to black ice and inexperience on a country lane, and one due to a van driver who didn't want to slow down and forced me into a hedge. :p

You could use this tool to find out if your first car is still around and about. :) - https://www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

Im pretty sure we have had these threads before but anyhow ill kick off:

1998 Corsa 1.4 Breeze.

- It was inherited from my dad when he passed away and I learnt to drive in it for a year before it was officially mine. After that I kept it for 5 years.
- I was definitely sad to see it go.
- Replaced it with a 2009 Honda Civic ES 1.8 iVTEC
- Lots of fond memories, road trip with mates after Alevels to Newquay and frequent trips to see my girlfriend in Uni holidays.
- Never crashed it.

TBH the new car is much better so there were no regrets to go alongside the sadness, no doubt I will be sad to see that go too when im ready to sell it :)

My first car was in 1998 a AX GTI

First car - 52 plate Renault Clio 1.2 Extreme. lol

Duration of ownership - 3/4 months

Sad to see it go - hellllll no

It's replacement - VXL Corsa 1.8 SRI

Fond memories - to share on the internets..... No...

Crashed - within the first seven days of ownership.... Lol. Spotted someone I knew whilst I was driving. Took my eyes off the road for about 5 seconds. Would've been 20 seconds had I not t boned a car at around 15mph lol

My first car was a green R reg Nissan Micra 1.0, I had it for around six months whilst I was learning to drive, I then passed my test and 10 days after passing my test it was written off when I was sat waiting at traffic lights and some guy drove into the back of my car.

Thankfully because of the nature of the accident it was fairly clear cut who was at fault, and it was quite quickly resolved by the insurance company. I then replaced it with another Nissan Micra that I kept for another six months.

I was fairly sad to see it go because the whole event was so unexpected, when the second one went I'd been into a garage and purchased another car so it was all a little more planned. No real fond memories of it though, but then I hadn't properly been out driving in it with anyone as I was still learning at the time.

A black 1989 Fiat Uno 60s. 3 door (D438BLP), 1116cc of pure awesome power. Looked after me well at, and too and from uni for many years. It didn't have any mod cons but you know what? It was comfy, drove well and was a great first car, it wasn't valuable but was also expensive enough for a young man to want to look after it. Insurance was peanuts.

Never crashed it (not had one to this day other than on a track), maintained it myself (so easy to do), and put 10s of thousands of enjoyable miles on it. Slept in it too. It went on many adventures with me.

N Reg Clio 1.4 champs elysees edition!

Absolute shed, £450 off eBay - within 12 months, drivers door was jammed, exhaust had one, brakes were not great and the engine mounts had perished so it rattled at idle :) £150 scrap value - fairly cheap motoring tbh!

Vauxhall Nova 1.0S

How long did you keep your first car? - I had it for about 2 years, was sat in the drive untill I passed my test. A family friend gave it to me.

Were you sad to see it go? - To a degree, yes. It was a fun little car for running around town and country lanes, but was unstable at speed and didnt like the cold/damp. I sold it for £180 and bought a new graphics card for my PC :)

What did you replace it with? - It was replaced by a Ford Escort 1.3 Encore

Any fond or amusing memories of it you would like to share? - The one which sticks to me the most was when I was driving home from Hullavington Barracks after helping a friend out, he had access to hanger. I pulled up to a roundabout to give way to the right and the engine cut out. An ambulance was coming up behind me too, which made the whole situation more interesting.

Did you crash it? How badly? - lol - I've never crashed a car yet. 8 years no claims and still counting :)

1st car was a Renault 12,for about £50. It was jacked up with a real wheel off when we bought it, the guy said it needed a new back brake cylinder, which it did and cost £5, however it was a lovely little con, as it also needed a gearbox. but didn't check that
we were only 14 yrs old at the time.

1st car I bought that I could legally use was a triumph dolomite 1850hl

A 1992(J) Fiesta Ghia. It was metallic burgundy on the top half and dark grey from the bump strips down. It had a sunroof, electric windows and a manual choke.

For a first car it was probably quite nice but I used to prefer driving my dads company car at the time which was a new 1.8 Vectra Tourer and compared to the fiesta it was like a limo so any excuse to take that instead :D.

The Fiesta stayed three years and then I bought my Astra SRi which I loved so never looked back really. The upside to it was that in three years of ownership all it cost me in repairs was £60 for a second hand drive shaft.

First Car - 96, Ford Fiesta 1.25 Ghia

Duration - about 13 months

Sad to see it go - Not one bit, cause i still see it everyday, my next door neighbor has it.

Replacement - Audi A3 - never really bonded with the fiesta but i adored my Audi

Fond memories - Long Road trips in the summer sun, sunroof open, and music loud

Crashed - Nope im shocked the thing is still running TBH

An N-reg Fiat Cinquecento SX. 899 cubic centimetres of sheer displacement. 39 raging horses.

Did me proud, though. Didn't put a foot wrong. Bought it for £200, sold it for £200.

Ford Fiesta Classic 1.1 (N reg so Mk3?)

Gotta dash to work so quick answers:

- How long did you keep your first car? 4 years!
- Were you sad to see it go? YES!
- What did you replace it with? Seat Leon Mk1
- Any fond or amusing memories of it you would like to share? Later

'95 Toyota Corolla 1.3

Owned for 18 Months

At the time I got rid of it was not sad to see it go, see below, but in hindsight it is probably the best (read: least troublesome) car I've owned, certainly the most economical. OK wasn't the most powerful car but certainly agile enough to be amusing for 90% of UK driving. Only downside was that it didnt inspire confidence in its stability over 70mph.

Replaced with: '90 BMW E34 525i SE inherited from my grandad which served me well for 5 years before before it just became too expensive to run, at the time. Now I wish I had kept it even if it was underpowered.

Never crashed or had particularly much fun in it, just a solid workhorse. Though it did survive me slamming on from 60 (no ABS here) for my nearest of near misses that I would never care to repeat. Cue a lot of tyre smoke and the rest of the journey smelling of rubber.

Mine was a '65 Ford Anglia 105E :) Bought for £200, did a little body work tidying, then ran it for about 4 years. Great little car, that never put a foot wrong - was a regretful sale :(

What was your first car?

A phase 1 Renault 5 GT Turbo, I paid £900 for it in 1998. It cost me £3010 a year to insure!

- How long did you keep your first car?

About six months.

- Were you sad to see it go?

Not really, it smoked like hell as the valve seals were shot when I bought it lol

- What did you replace it with?

A Ford fiesta RS Turbo

- Any fond or amusing memories of it you would like to share?

It melted a piston after a "spirited" drive across Dartmoor, I sold it to my mate who owned a local garage.

- Did you crash it? How badly?

Luckily no. It was made of tin foil!

SPK721F <-- Why I would remember the Rego on it I dunno

It was a (around) 1968 Hillman Hunter. I think I replaced it with a MkII Cortina 2 door of about the same vintage.

2002 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SXi

pf9qNdU.jpg

-Had it for five years

-Bit sad to see it go as it had served me well during that time and got me to Scotland without a hitch when I moved up here. It was pretty-much exactly the car I wanted at the time in terms of colour, spec level etc. Was starting to go a bit wrong towards the end though and some bills were incoming so I think we parted at the right time.

-Replaced it with a 2007 Mazda 3 Sport

-Reversed into the corner of the rear bumper of an old Volvo after I'd had it a couple of months. Volvo was fine, cracked my rear bumper. Gutted.
