So Looking for something with an i5 or similar processor, 4GB memory though 6GB would be better and a non integrated graphics card (probably the most important part!), touch screen as it will most likely be Windows 8

Battery life is not critical at all.

Is this budget feasible?

My son has a non touch screen windows 8 laptop....absolutely crazy.

So yes I understand why I put that requirement in and it does need touch screen :)

Windows 8.1 is perfectly usable without a touch screen and it is by no means a requirement, you are going to restrict your search by quite a margin if you make it a requirement that's all I'm saying. Why spend out for something you do not need?

At your price range you are going to struggle with a 'gaming laptop' my partner recently got a new laptop (touchscreen) for that price range and while good for some low end gaming struggles with anything more intensive. I've not got the model number to hand but I'll update this post tomorrow to give you an idea of what was purchased in that price range.

Yep that would be good. Agreed the touchscreen is not absolutely critical - although I do think Windows 8 struggles without a touchscreen on general operation. My son does cope with it though

i'd be looking at clevo custom built models with that kind of budget (often called something different depending on where you get them), something like an i5 with a nvidia 850m or something, ocuk should really start selling clevo models. yeah don't need a touch screen for windows 8, its just a big screen start menu, use scroll wheel to move left and right in start screen and click on the icons.

At the moment the one I am looking at is

Lenevo ThinkPad Edge S440

Fast Hardrive 7200rpm - 500gb
AMD Radeon HD 8670M Graphics 2GB
4th Gen Intel Core i5-4200U Processor (3MB Cache, up to 2.60GHz)
4GB Memory

Screen isn't great (14' and 1366x768) but I think all in all coming out £560 with 10% employee discount I can't find many deals that match this spec

the 8670m is a pretty bad gaming chip. You can do better for that money. i found a similar spec clevo but with a 850m which is much better for gaming for the same money. cant link due to competitor rules.

I'll take a look thanks, when I checked the clevos putting an i5 in and a reasonable drive seemed to shoot the price up but I'll review again

OK I'm still on this one and getting closer :)

Cosmos II seems the best starting position, I have got it with

15.6' screen 1920x1080 - or should I go 1366x768 as it would bring me back into budget

750gb hard drive (7200rpm)
8gb Ram
850m Gfx card - good call on that
i54210

Gets me to £613 including VAT (got the 1 year return to base and also the 30 day dead pixel cover) That excludes the OS

As she is a student the OS can be brought from MS fgor £50 incl VAT saving £35

So gets to £665 but a stunning Laptop imho for the price

In the end I went for the same spec as above but with the 17' screen at 1600x900 res. I'm pretty happy with the spec so just cross fingers laptop turns out as good as it looks

I did wimp out and rang up to change the order, moved the screen to a 1980x1080 - be interesting how it performs as the 850m should be very capable, the i5 less so but lots of memory as well.

The reason I changed it, not many reviews on the 17' but one for the 1600 17' screen said the colours were dull whereas one with a 1980 screen couldn't praise the screen enough..

Will post when it arrives but it does mean total budget ended up at £760 so quite a bit above my original budget.

lol yep - in the past I have brought already designed laptops so it has been a bit easier to keep under control. Ths way its so tempting to keep upgrading - be interesting how it turns out :)
