Will a reference block fit a Sapphire 290 Tri-X?

No, I just remember reading that it uses the reference PCB

If it uses the reference PCB then yes the reference water block should fit, just to be sure give the EK cooling configurator a bash:

+1 on the cooling configurator. Great tool. I've have previously only considered XSPC blocks / rads but I'm warming to some of the EK stuff.

To slightly hijack the thread (sorry) the EK blocks which are defined as nickel. Does that mean nickel plating but the internals are copper or are they nickel too?

Yes it's Nickel plated Copper, from what I've read Nickel is not as good a heat conductor as Copper, the plating is only a very thin outer layer and is mainly cosmetic because it won't oxidise/tarnish like Copper does when exposed to air.

I'd just be weary of EK's plating process due to the severe issues they were having, they are meant have fixed that now though.
