Save my boss from himself - Petrol in diesel

The answer depends on what type of engine and fuel system it is.

If it has a high pressure pump (common rail) get it drained, these pumps are already running at the minimum level of lubrication required and adding petrol drastically reduces the lubricity of the fuel.

If it's an older and non-CR car, I'd just add a litre of 2 stroke oil and top off with diesel - if you don't really care, you could also do this on a common rail engine and take a gamble..

What year/car /engine is it?

Its a 2008 Zafira cdti 150! He's not driven it to work today so its either gone bang and he isn't saying anything or he took pipe home to syphon it out for good measure.

Its the 1.9 engine. I personally think he was potty driving it home but still!

Horrible engine, but would i be right in thinking this is one of the older diesel engines? The older ones have a better resistance to petrol in the tank!

As it happens I did this to a 57 plate Astra cdti 1.9 150 once many years a go.

I put around 30% petrol in, realised and then topped up with Diesel. There were no issues what so ever.

Indeed, he was due to trade it in next week for a 1.7! Not sure if that's a better lump or not, but he's had endless EGR and DPF issues with the 1.9

A Mate did this to an HGV, Common Rail Scania R480, it ran without issue for another 100k KM and then lunched its engine when its turbo failed.

Difficult if not impossible to say if the 100ltr of petrol he'd put in it was the cause (it had 800 litre tanks) but the end bill was the far side of £20k!

How could you even put petrol into a truck?
There are special pumps for truck diesel :p

Petrol in diesel? Most likely fine at that ratio. As mentioned 25% petrol to diesel to stop it freezing in sub zero environment is not uncommon.

If it were the other way around (diesel in petrol), different story.

other other way round chap, diesel in a petrol just causes poor running or breakdown. Petrol in a diesel damages the pump and high pressure injectors. Have done a few with repair bills going towards the £6000 mark.

We recommend draining the tank and replacing the filter up to the 10% mark, below that and it's normally OK.

He'd filled it up at a small garage without a dedicated HGV pump and must have picked up the unleaded pump by mistake, I presume he's colour blind!! :D

Truck Drivers seem able to manage / mangle all kinds of things....

Another common one with Scania & Volvo trucks is to find some numpty has put screen wash in the brake fluid reservoir!!

Well at least your brakes would be squeaky clean on the inside.

Indeed. That's what counts!

Do they also put brake fluid in the screen wash reservoir? I can't imagine that being much fun when you come to wash your windscreen. :p

One of the trucks at work this morning is off the road for the day, an agency driver has put about 80litres of Ad-Blu (an additive for emissions) in the diesel tank instead of it's dedicated one!

The list is nearly endless of the things that go on!!

Sounds like you should get better labels on the tank lids ;)

The scary thing is they are labeled, not to mention the diesel tanks are huge, the Ad-Blu ones tiny, the Ad-Blu pump nozzle is different too, coloured Blue and with a tiny nozzle. Still they **** it up!

Given that is obviously a red bull livery on the car this is probably a publicity stunt and the stuff in those cans isnt what it seems :p
