in my opinion it's down to the console games.
I mean..... seriously look at how much some of those titles cost, e.g. nindendo DS and such games..... new £30+ for crummy graphics, usually a rehash of some franchise and a tiny plastic cartridge

then ofc you have PS and Xbox slapping an even higher cost than that.... at least you can trade those games in though and get you know.... like 50p back xD or after a week just take the game back.... or even rent it for a fiva for the weekend and just rinse through the game. closest thing we get as pc gamers is just download the game and then if you enjoyed be a good guy and buy the game out right.
we don't get any demos anymore (barely... or paid in ******* pre-alpha/alpha/closed/open-beta). ok the free beta can let you try before you buy to make more of an educated decision but with bf4.... the alpha/beta were great.... game gets released... everything is ******!!!! I was happy with my purchase during the beta but damn... how did they screw it up so bad!!!! like now..... hardline is out and well.....it's the closest thing to a demo we have..... but still subject to change heavily, so they can get away with anything.
we are lucky with the likes of steam sales, humble bundles and cheap key sites. but it's still insane how much they are up front. the most mind boggling are the COD games.... full price ever game.... yet just some new textures and a different story... and that's all that's changed

but check the COD games on steam... last time I checked they were all still pretty damn expensive... for something that used to be repackaged as "gold" or what ever in the bargain box, you know the ones.... where it came in a cardboard sleeved box, with a pic of the box art taking up a smaller section in the middle of the cover and just surrounded by white/whatever with the orange line going around the box xD
not to mention that all these other games now with their "buy in" to alphas.....what if they never actually finish the game? free money? would they refund everyone?
I still also hate damn monthly subs.... I remember BACK IN THE DAY when Ultima online was £2.49 a month to sub!!!! and they only had a few hundred thousand subs... but then had to increase their sub cost to keep alive. where as every over game just goes straight out to the BOOM £9.99/8.99 mark after charging £30 for the game too. with my UO sub I bought the game for £5!!!!!!! granted later expansions were a bit dearer but that's probably because they knew their community base and were realistic in what they needed to keep things ticking over. shame it's not the same as it used to be
basically...... every company has cranked up the capitalist dial and are more worried about their quota and share holders turning giant profits that they promised for a game that is sub par, rushed and ultimately not going to be around long enough for them to really car all that much as they have already planned out the next few cash cows
