So I'm building a really powerful rig but was hoping to get a 4790k for it. Seems no one has any on stock but the 4790 is shall I just go for that one or will having the k make a big difference?

well the K offers overclocking ability where the vanilla doesn't and the stock speed is 4ghz turboing to 4.4ghz. I think you will be in for a fair wait for the K though so I would just get a cheapo, even one of the anniversary, Pentium cpus for now and get a 4790k when they are available in decent amounts.

Go for the i7 4770K if you don't want to wait, but get a Z97 board so that you have the option for a 4790K or Broadwell when it gets released.

Well this is the rest of the rig

looks good but dunno how you are going to fit 2x120mm rads and a h105 in there.. I personally would get a cheap cpu and fit and get the rest of the system up and running, installed and tested working etc. By then preorder a 4790k and when that arrives swap it over and get it overclocked.

The rest of the system is the top daddy so why settle for second best with an old gen cpu?

Yeah thats the dilemma, I'm thinking about getting a longer term solution and changing when next years CPU's come out... 4770k then?

Oh, as for the rads - I can install them by removing the 3.5" bays. 4TB of SSD's should cover space for the time being...

Sod it lol, I want it this week. thus 4770k ordered.

Unless you get a very decent overclocker you'll regret it in about a week, 4770K is not that far off 4790K but buying a 4770K so close to 4790K release is madness really. 4790K are at the very least cherry picked 4770K's with a few other improvements.

This tbh, especially when you look at how badly recent chips seem to overclock. Seems the only way to guarantee a decent clocking 4770k theese days is to buy a proven clocker secondhand. Unfortunately theese dont pop up very often.

Considering all the parts this build should be going with an extreme cpu or biting the bullet on the wait for a 4790k. Scratch that it should be going with an extreme, plain and simple.

I would have got a Pentium Anniversary or something and then waited for a 4790K. They are said to run up to 15 degrees cooler, and are supposedly better clockers too.

A 4790K will most likely retain its value better than a 4770K as well, because now Devils Canyon chips are available, the 4770K will be remembered as "the one that got replaced because it ran hot and was rubbish for overclocking"
