Hi guys

I refuse to pay £400-£500+ for the newest from Sony/Samsung/HTC as I can't justify that much on a phone. Neither can I justify extortionate 24 monthly contracts of £30+

So out of the higher end phones I'm pretty much down to either a nexus 5 at £250-£275 or the LG G2 at around £270-£300

Now these 2 phones are near enough identical in price sim free, which would be the best to go for?

Thanks

Do you need a 32GB model, as you'll only be able to get that on the Nexus as far as I know.

If not, as you're happy with 16GB then you can't really go wrong with either. The Nexus has the upper hand in being simpler software, but the G2 has the better hardware (screen/battery/camera really).

I went for an M8 last weekend, it was a tossup between that and the s5, I was tempted by the LG but it's not out yet and my aging s3 was a bit battle damaged.

Out of the Nexus 5 and the LG I would go LG, my mate has a nexus5 and its just... a bit dull.

If the nexus 5 was massively cheaper on contract, I would be tempted, but on unlimited data contracts it doesn't seem cheaper enough to me.

Cheers for the prompt replies

I don't think I'll need the 32gb hopefully. My current phone is 16gb and I seem to get by ok on that.

I don't really use the camera on my current phone, but that's more to do with the fact it's not that good.

The bigger battery in the G2 is definitely tempting though!
I would say N5 if you are going to remain on the stock OS, or G2 if you are going to use custom ROMs :)

I doubt I'll be putting custom ROM's on in the near future as this is my first foray back in android camp since it was on version 2! on my old trusty Tmobile G1 phone lol.

Would I not be able to get the LG G2 to look like stock android, without loosing the LG specific functions?

The M8/GS5 etc are far too expensive for me to spend sim free, and I refuse to be tied down to a 2 year fixed monthly fee of over £30 a month. I normally go sim free and 1 monthly rolling contracts which I switch as a better deal becomes available. (I'm only paying £8 a month at the moment for example on a rolling 1 month contract)

They're both LG :p

Anyway in response to the OP, i would say it is completely down to personal preference and what you want out of a smartphone. Nexus 5 arguably has better build quality and it's always nice to have the latest version of android as soon as it is released. The G2 has a bigger and better screen, slimmer bezels, better battery life and a better camera.

I sold my G2 to get a Nexus 5 late last year and if i had the choice again I'd probably stick with the G2. The main reason is that i do a lot of web browsing, youtube, gaming etc and i just prefer the bigger, better screen and better battery life. If you wouldn't find extra screen size an advantage then I'd say it's a 50/50 on which I'd prefer. Eventually i sold the N5 aswell and i now own a Note 3 and Z ultra (again, due to wanting more screen size) and i love them both but i do REALLY miss stock android from the n5 more than i though i would.

Both are great phones and I'm sure you won't be disappointed with either.

Ahh, yeah battery is a great point actually! 2300mAh on the N5 is pretty pathetic (imo). Personally, I would go with the G2 and nerf as much LG bloatware as possible... or just install Cyanogenmod probably :p

Are you serious? The Nexus 5 is amazing, looks beautiful and is a fantastic device, I haven't had one bad word to say about it since owning it, sure there are some flaws, but there are flaws to everything.

Oh btw, they are both made by LG ;)

There both good at different things.

Nexus 5:
  • Solid software
  • Quick software updates
  • Better build
  • Better Calibrated Display
  • No back buttons

LG G2:
  • Better viewing angles on screen
  • Better battery life
  • Better camera
  • Removable battery
  • SD card

Internals are the same, so it comes down too better software/build vs better battery life/camera.

The G2 has a removable battery and SD card slot? How have I missed this chestnut of information?

It doesn't

BTW, There is a cracking deal on at the moment.

EE instore only, £13.99 a month, 500 minutes, unlimited texts and 500mb data (4G as well)

If that's a bit too low then you can get the £18.99 a month, 1000 minutes, unlimted texts and 1GB data, this also includes 4G.

This offer ends Friday though :(

Out of interest, which has the better camera - the G2 or N5?

Also to the OP - You can now flash the G3 rom or a variant of it to the G2 and get UHD video too :)

I think the G2 is considered to be easily the better.

The N5 isn't bad by any means, in fact I've found it quite impressive, but there's definitely better out there!

Having had both devices and used them both extensively I can say that for battery life the G2 is amazing, however if you want speed and snappiness I'd go for the N5, however the battery life is considerably worse than the G2. The screen is also brighter on the N5 and by default the G2 screen is quite dull.

Either way you can't go wrong with whatever device you chose, however should you go with the G2 make sure you get the 32GB variant from German rainforest. The UK only have 16GB models for sale here.

I've got a nexus 5 en route.... just wondered whether or not to order a G2 as well to compare.

If you've got the spare cash then yeah why not? Well done for returning back to the N5 BTW lol

However if you're looking for sheer speed in a device, the G2 falls slightly behind the N5, but that 5.2" screen and battery that seems to go on for ages are massive plus points for the G2.

Put it this way I swapped out my N5 for the G2 twice but ultimately came back to the N5 because I wanted a super smooth performance which the N5 gave me in the end.

Yes I sacrificed the bigger screen and epic battery life but don't regret going back to the N5 at all.
