I've had horsefly bites plenty of times. They itch a bit but I wouldn't say they hurt.

My mum nearly had her foot amputated after being bitten by a Horse fly. To this day (decades later) has a wicked scar on her ankle.

I'm not certain that's a horse fly. Looks more like a drone fly to me, which is a large species of hoverfly.

My mum has a scar on her arm from a bite off one. Looks like she's been branded with the top of a midget gem!
