AMD Catalyst 14.6 RC Driver for Windows OS available now

borley what problems do you have with Mantle in BF4? before upgrading my GPU i ran a 2GB Tahiti LE on BF4 with Mantle but i did have to tweak some of the IQ settings to get it to run perfectly, which it did.

I might be able to help you. :)

Hi i don't have a major problem apart from some spikes, its that the 7970 is still not optimized! i mean BF4 for some people has already come to the end of its life, so it was a false promise for some of us. But thanks for the offer of help.

Those spikes come from a memory leak / over-fill, i had the same problem on that aforementioned Tahiti.

Hawaii and Tahiti manage memory differently to each other, the problem lays in the way BF4 manages memory in Mantle, its a way that Hawaii is designed for while Tahiti is not, the only people who can fix it are DICE.

Having said that, you can get around it. In BF4 IQ setting turn the "Texture Quality" to Medium, it may work on High since you have 3GB, if not it will work on a lower setting.

oh... before you do, go here and delete these two files.

Thanks for the info people but i do want to upgrade soon i will give your suggestions a try but still want to try Nvidia some time soon.

I've never found Mantle to work well on my 7950's and I really do think AMD are just brushing those cards off, less and less 7xxx series improvements with each driver release. I understand it as the new architecture is that much better and more efficient but also completely different in certain areas so they have to prioritise. However, I still bought in to all the announcements on how it would fully support 7*** series cards which led me to upgrade whilst staying with AMD but it hasn't really paid off. On the other hand I hit 100fps avg in BF4 on ultra with D3D but next to my mate on a single 290 with Mantle, I have higher FPS but his is smoother.

Not really. There is a very limited amount of optimization that can be done at driver level by AMD on Mantle. Most of the optimization for Tahiti must come from the developer, in this case Dice/EA. What optimizations that can be done at driver level have already been done. Anything further must come from Dice/EA. When you look at the uplift Mantle has for Tahiti on Thief, or even Starswarm you quickly realise that the issue is actually an application issue, rather than Mantle just does not work as well on Tahiti. That said, Mantle works very well on my HD7770 and provides a nice uplift on that computer in any Mantle title.

As for your friends Mantle 290 being smoother than your DX11 7950 setup, that is no surprise. DX11 will never provide a similar experience to what Mantle can offer. Doesn't matter how good your hardware is when it's handicapped by the API.

To be honest its just crossfire that makes it seem less smooth, if I use one card its as smooth as his but obviously not enough to push the game and it will jerk. I also didn't buy a second card to not use it :p and I get lower FPS with Mantle in crossfire than D3D plus the occasional big spikes that make it unusable.

Are you exceeding the vram limit? Sounds like it.

Assume so as on Ultra. It works fine in DX on Ultra so Mantle is the issue, whether that's DICE or AMD I don't really care if i'm honest. Its almost 6 months from first Mantle release and it still doesn't work properly.

As BF4 was the flagship Mantle game I would have expected both companies to have made sure it was working as it should.

The issue is Dices memory management within Mantle. No other Mantle title (Plants Vs Zombies included) has memory issues. Mantle gives more control to the developers, that's what they asked for, that's what they've got. It has its good and bad points, as you can see. The BF4 vram usage is a bad point, but it's on Dice/EA to fix. AMD did not write the Dice Battlefield 4 Mantle code path, or code their memory management implementation. AMD will not be able to go in and alter someone else's game code so im afraid it's up to Dice to fix it.

By all means feel free to rant and or be annoyed at the situation, not trying to deny you that. Just explaining where the problem lies and im afraid it's not with AMD.

I would be interested to see if this also affects BFH, it might go some way to explaining if its a FrostBite 3 engine issue or a DICE issue. unfortunately i don't have a 7K GPU anymore.

Fair point. I've not tested Hardline much, but there is no issue on Plants Vs Zombies and that is Frostbite 3. Hardline is still a beta though and i would expect its Mantle version to change between now and launch, 5 months from now. It was not at the same level of performance as Mantle from BF4 was, vram issues aside.

EDIT

I would expect Hardline to have the same memory issue, though i don't know for sure. I hope Frostbite are re-writing it, like they said they would.

I have noticed the performance discrepancies, but its still soooooo smothy smoooooooth, its like a big Duck Down Duvet on a cold winters night.
