National Service

I think National Service isn't a bad idea, but I don't think that it has to be purely military service. Some kind of public service to instill a sense of national pride, social responsibility etc wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Of course, I only say that because I'm too old for it. :D

Agreed. :)

Social responsibility, sure, but national pride isn't a good thing.

Why is national pride a bad thing ? Are you advocating that everyone should despise their own country ?

I'm proud to be English and to have served my country, but it doesn't mean I run around with rose tinted glasses on. I know we have a lot major issues which need addressing, but I resolve that side of things at the ballot box.

Nah, expensive waste of peoples time and useless for the armed services, if you want a bigger army make the renumeration more attractive, if you nwant to be nasty to chavs send them to prison if you want to stop chavs happening make their parenting better and go back in time to when the lower orders aspired to be a toolmaker for the good money not a pimp.

pointless - we've got a professional armed forces, they don't require conscripts

The govt could make reserve service more attractive - perhaps legally enforce extra compulsory leave for reservists (2 weeks to cover annual training requirements) - something which some large companies already voluntarily agree to and pay bonuses to small employers who employ reservists (as a form of compensation). Make it a more attractive prospect for everyone.
That's the area we've got a shortfall in under the current govt policies - recruitment into the reserves is massively under target...

As a serving soldier I wouldn't want to work alongside anyone that had been forced to be there.

1+ I think for me that would be the biggest issue with national service, while they discipline side of it would help those that needed it, i wouldn't fancy being stuck in a contact on tour with someone who's mind is elsewhere.
