I recently had a tooth done and it's just dawned on me:

What if it comes off and I swallow it/lose it. How would the dentist be able to make a new one? For this one he took a mold of my current tooth before grinding it down. What if it doesn't come off for 10-20 years, how does the dentist make a new one with no mold to go by?

I would phone my dentist but it's the weekend. If he still has the original mold I may ask to keep it in my possession.

A) You will choke
B) They just remove your lower jaw
C) None of the above is true
D) This is a medical thread

You're the first person that has ever had a veneer fitted that will have this problem and the dentist won't have a clue what to do, you will be left with an ugly mess for a smile.

Alright smartarse, what does the dentist do then?

Just read that a laboratory will simply make a veneer based on a mould of the rest of your teeth. Case closed.

eh?

How exactly did they make the veneer in the first place?

Usually the surface of the tooth is prepared, then an impression taken, this is sent to a lab, the lab make the veneer, the veneer is sent to the dentist, who 'sticks' it into place with a form of cement.
The tooth for the in between time either has a temp formed and fitted, or nothing at all, depending on the situation.

If it comes off, it can be stuck back on, if kept, if it is lost then:

If it comes off, they reprepare if necessary, take new impression, send that to the lab for a new one, and cement that into place. Again with or without a temporary.
