Saw this and i thought why on earth do Americans tip so much??

If it were like this as standard in the UK i think id be sick.:p

Why tip someone if they don't deserve it?

Why tip at all? Don't they get Wages?

Yeah its been a while since we had good tip thread.

Next tip ill give will be a poo and a brass letter box.

I also dont understand the comma key

If somebody goes the extra mile in terms of service then they get a tip from me. Otherwise no. They get paid a wage.

I don't get tips for making the operating equipment extra clean, so why should somebody get extra money off me for bringing me a sandwich.

10% if average, less if a bit poor, more if very good. And restaurants only, not haircuts and stuff (unless it's say £9, then keep the change).

We have different pay-laws, I believe.

Minimum wage isn't great but it's better than begging for the tip-jar.

We need a British version of that poster.

For example, I always tip my hairdresser. I rarely tip a taxi-driver unless he was rather good/fun or I'm in a spectacularly good mood. I don't think I've ever tipped a barman, although I've dropped change in the jar at the barista's. I tend to tip at restaurants if I've enjoyed my meal, although I get very annoyed when companies assume a tip (gratuity) over here and it tends to get my back up to the point I won't tip at all.

This. I do the same in restaurants and my haircut is £9 and I say keep the change from a tenner.

First time to USA a few weeks ago in Vegas and I had no idea who to tip. Ended up tipping in restaurants, tipping taxi driver, tipping the guy who picked us up for the helicopter flights and then again back to the hotel. Tipping bel hops it was crazy.

Because their employer pays them **** all. They survive on tips. It'll be the same in this country before too long. We'll be working, volunteering, for free (this is what Cameron wants) and we'll survive on charity, i.e. tips.

Of course, the employer will not only be making money from providing the goods and services, but also taking a % of the tips too. Employees lose out again. Rich get richer. Poor get poorer. It's the future.

I don't tip for anything. This will surprise precisely no one :p

The American system is unfathomable. Basically the employee gets little/nothing from the company she provides with her labour, and so the clients of said company have to pay staff wages?

That's frankly very silly.

Thought the thread was going to be about fly-tipping actually. Tipping in this country is really not a thing.

Heck I used to double my monthly wage with tips working in a nightclub. To be fair I imagine a lot of them felt sorry for me thinking I was on minimum wage.

I tip for good service simple. I hate these pre-added gratuities. I always deduct them and either give tip in cash or none at all.

America is a weird place where even shocking service is apparently deserving of a tip. I got shouted at when I refused haha.

Tipping is generally provided in the service industry. The service industry should provide a good level of service if they are doing there job correctly hence I will tip if they go above and beyond.

Food for thought: My other half is a paramedic and she never gets a tip. Should she only provide an exemplary service if she is expecting a tip?
