After moving house and been with Virgin/cable what seems like all my life. I am forced to change provider and use sky broadband unlimited, after the DLM stage I be looking at around 6 megabit lol a massive change coming from 120mb I feel sick.

Atm I have wolfenstein on download 44GB and it's going to take 2days. My question is how do you guys who not yet on fibre handle this? Do you buy your games on disk and just download patches?
If I get my speed of 6mb it will make downloads bit better at 17 hours for 50gb
fibre is looking like sometime next year, how will I handle this lol

I never really minded it though towards the end I had 10Mbit down, 1.1Mbit up on ADSL2+ but it would probably be a bit of a shock going back now having a full 80/20 FTTC connection.

If you can post Router stats we may be able to advise about tweaks to the line a little.

This what I have so far. I been reading and told Sky DLM will increase my speed abit. I be very happy to get 8megbit = 1 megabyte till I get fibre. but not sure if thats possible because my distance and Line Attenuation is 51 dB is around 6mb

Horrible connection coming from 120mb virgin, download speed wise. Playing online so far I had no issue. Just that download speed

Router
Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2485 kbps 500 kbps
Line Attenuation 51.0 dB 31.4 dB
Noise Margin 5.6 dB 7.7 dB

Hmm 5.6db @ 2.5mbit doesn't look good - I had only slightly better attenuation on ADSL2+ and managed to get 10Mbit with a DG834GT and SNR target margin tweaked to 3db. But at 2.5Mbit sync I'd have had like 11-12db SNR or something.

Unless you can tidy that up your going to struggle to get 6Mb with SNR tweaks and the right modem let alone 8.

Yeah When first switched on I read I must leave router on for first 10 days while sky do there Line testing. so hopefully that increases it.

Do you know what your Line Attenuation was? from what I have read this is the distance from exchange to home and effects the speed. So maybe your Line Attenuation was lower?

Can't remember exactly but it was somewhere between 40 and 50. Actual line length was 2.88km but attenuation was a bit higher than the pure distance based figure. Was pretty impressed with the 834 - held on like a limpet other routers/modems couldn't get stable above 6-6.5mbit.

Am around 4km from exchange. Just looks like I after put up with it till fibre be comes available.

the noise margin is too low to get 6mbit. you need to check that the bellwire is disconnected and that you have a high quality adsl filter and are connected to the test socket.

I have been on 4.5mb for the last few years and coped fine. Annoying to have to leave the comp on overnight when downloading a big game but needs must. I will be Sky Fiber Tuesday though :p

Yeah I be very happy is Sky's DLM increase to around 8mb.. Playing online last night it was perfect so am very happy with that.
Just downloading, fibre couldn't come fast now.

Consider yourself lucky. I live in the largest town in Northumberland and can get a maximum of 1.5mb/s. It's pathetic. The exchange I'm on is 2km away as the crow flies but God knows what the cable length actually is. Ironically there's one in the next town over that is closer and all that lies between me and it is fields which would be pretty easy to dig up!
I know people out in the sticks who get faster speeds. Town in reference is Wallington, look it up...there is literally nothing near it!
BT have been telling me fibre has been going to be installed for the last year. Our little green box (which I can see from my window) has had stickers plastered all over it for the last 6 months saying "infinity is here!". Is it balls.
The date on the BT website just keeps rolling out month after month. First it was Dec 2013, then March 2014, then April the 13th, then end of April, then 17th May, then End of May...you get the idea. It's now due to be installed between June and July.1..erm...that leaves Monday then. Won't hold my breath on that one!
