Anyone do Go-Kart Racing?

Did you get your kart sorted?

I've had two races since I last updated, I rebuilt my kart on a new chassis and I got a 3rd place podium at Glan Y Gors and a 9th place finish last weekend at Three Sisters.

Got a few things to do before my next race next weekend at Little Rissington, but I'm looking forward to it.

A few pics.

This is kind of off-topic as such but i have always put off outdoor karting because ever time i have been go karting indoors after the 4th lap i come over so nauseous. I always put this down to the fumes etc. Anyone else get this?

Believe it or it, it could be travel sickness. I used to get it lol :p

A travel sickness pill 30 minutes before racing used to sort me out.

I no longer have the issues though..

Had some cool kit on it as well including a digidash with exhaust temp sensor to fine tune the jets.

Good for 140+ on the straight at Snetterton :D

Nice :D

There are 2 classes of Gearbox karts this weekend at Little Rissington along side my RAF class and the usual others. Always love seeing them flat out at insane speeds.

I was a member at Little Rissington and used to do short circuit 250 National there. Changed to long circuit due to too much contact in short circuit and too many people who drove like animals.

Not to mention the insane cornering speeds of long circuit :)

I was punted out of 2 heats last weekend, 1 on the warm up lap!

What was the setup/running costs of 250 National like?, if you don't mind me asking :)

Nice, I raced my last race of the RAF season at Clay Pigeon in September.

Saw some of the Easykart outfits there, looked well ran.

I'm off testing tomorrow at Three Sisters.

I've upgraded to a 2014 Kosmic Chassis since I've last posted here.

Taken at Clay:

You might need a new rear bumper, I think the type you have isn't allowed anymore

Well took mine for a shakedown at whilton mill today

previous karting experience is arrive and drive stuff. The tyres on my kart are what it came with theres little benefit in putting new on at the moment

Safe to say the first two laps were a lot less grippy that i would have even imagined, the kart had not been used in around a year. I was very surprised at how long it took for them to come up to temp arrive and drive stuff is usually very little at all.

It took around 2 laps to get confidence in the tyres, something i can now relate to f1 drivers, first outing was just around 8 laps I forgot to put my gloves on so was freezing by this point but the kart held together and i got the pure feeling of how these two stroke things are, Just plain mental.

It was a lot faster and louder than I expected, a 16k reving two stroke under your armpit was actually a bit scary while i was driving around, i kept thinking it was going to just blow into millions of pieces taking out my side lol. Something I i will get over.

Second outing I did around 19 laps, picked up some consistency also confidence, there were some corners with bumps on braking points which were catching me out I never span (a fair few others did) but I found it hard to successfully overcome these few areas of weakness. I came in feeling fairly chuffed i did a 53 second lap on a 100% not setup kart on my shakedown. The series i am in lap time this year was around 46 - 47.5 seconds so lots to find.

Started to just change the setup, I widened the front and the rear to hopefully dial out the oversteer i had been struggling with. The kart was as i bought it so it really needed changing for the track, easykart supply basic setup data for each circuit so i was able to read this to make my changes. I also tweeked the carb.

Went to the pit lane and the blooming starter Bendix thing would not engage, just a wurr from the starter motor. Came back to my truck to investigate but could not get it to go so came home. Dropped the kart back to the unit and guess what, first push of the button she fired up. Never mind.

I ordered a starter Bendix for £27 and will hopefully get out again next Wednesday at Whilton if the weather is any good.

Despite my issue I am totally chuffed its a awesome bit of kit and real basic for the beginners like myself.

You'll learn to heat your tyres up quicker as you confidence builds. There is a bit of a nack to it but you will find it soon enough

You'll shave seconds off your laptimes after a few more outings, then you'll be down to chasing tenths!

Starters are always a bit of a pain, try to avoid getting any chain lube in there when you spray the chain as this can cause them to stick. Sometimes a gentle nudge with a hammer is all it needs though

yes, already the pressures were probably a bit low for the amount of track time i was doing in the session, around 9psi so will up that next time.

just need to work on the oversteer on corner exit now :)

Thanks for the messages guys.

Not sure if i mentioned i am doing this all on my own at the moment, so no track side help etc surprising how much it takes it out of you doing everything. I have a Driv up kart trolley which is a god send.

Arrived at whilton this morning to a wet but drying track. I didn't really know if i wanted to go out in the wet but all experience is good experience it took me a while to get sorted to go out with very few changes to the kart made I kept the pressures up in the tyres to around 12psi to hopefully get them turned on quicker.

The track was dry in places and each lap confidence gained. However my first spin was fun as I just outbraked myself totally into a corner on the back straight, i dont know why i diddnt turn i just went straight onto the mud, beached and feeling like a pleb I picked myself out and then rolled straight down onto the other curb and beached myself again lol. Sorted myself out and did a few laps to try and clean up the tyres.

When I came in There was mud everywhere so spent until lunch tidying the kart up which also meant removing the engine sproket cover as that had mud in it. Anyhow I manged to stick some slicks on and go out for 15 mins before lunch, I span out twice the conditions were tricky as it was damp in places. Still I wanted to do that before the brake to get my head together.

I ran with my rib protector on in that run, but my newly purchased and fitted seat is to small, it felt ok in the shop but its rattling me to bits on the track, it was a s/m so assuming a m/l will sort it, another load of cash blown.

Went out after lunch and put a good lot of laps on the car, hit a curb to hard which sent me spinning but was recoverable. I was hitting 50.2 very consistently which i was pleased about however I said to a friend yesterday i was hoping for 49's.

I can feel the kart coming to me after 10 or so laps but it takes that amount of time at the mo to get the confidence in it and the tyres right where they need to be.

I then did a 29 lap stint at the end of the day, I could feel the confidence coming on strong, braking later, finding different lines that Rotax boys were taking, as well as finding my own way.

Still sat in the 50's but did post a 49.9 on lap 17. I was chuffed . Mychron says I had a 49.7 in me if i hooked it up today. I found it easier to get the tyres on and the kart was faultless again :).

On one of the last few laps i could feel rib pain coming on sharp. I don't think my seat has done me any favors, either bruised or cracked a rib maybe, cant even move of my pc chair at the mo.

I watched some videos last night of others on easykarts and how easy they make it look to dip into the 49's and beyond. I am driving the nuts of my kart but again setup has not really been changed. So I hope I am quick enough when it comes to it as the extra 3/4 secs seems a lot overall, hmmm.

Not sure what 80+ lap old tyres and cold weather will do to my laptime of what that is worth if anything.

Sorry to waffle on but i like to document these things :)

Man I hated EasyKart when my son ran in it.. You basically had to be in Andy's team to have a chance back then.. The best thing about it was Clay Pigeon , which is an amazing track, pity it is miles away from anywhere!

We sold ours after 3 races, as the stewarding at race events was absolutely woeful, race weekend at Clay my son was put off 4 times, had the van packed up even before they had started the next final!

You really should have gone for Rotax.

Don't worry about your times as well, the tyres will be shot to pieces by now, a new set should get you roughly .5 at least. Oh, and another thing on a damp track I always sent my son out on slicks, nothing better to increase your feel of the kart!

Good luck with Ek, I am afraid you might need it if you do a season!

Hmmm, since owning the kart I can honestly say after speaking with EK a few times, it feels a bit like that? Trying to find out info or advise and the lady Jane as nice as she is doesn't really know and Andy doesn't seem to do the phone.

I was inquiring about a battery yesterday £29quid on ebay standard connector or £99 for EK with the Freeline connector on it. Its the only battery that can be run, other things are stupidly priced too. Its like they buy at retail and add 30% on.

I have been thinking about club racing instead today infact. Rotax. Parts easier to obtain, much more advise around and quicker for sure. It was the drive home after a days karting today that did it. only 40 miles but i was ruined from the track time. doing that on a Sunday evening from cumbria doesn't excite me much today.

Hmmm...

Get a second hand Rotax engine, starter etc and fire it onto the chassis. At least you can run rookie in club races :)

Remember rotax tires will last a bit longer as well, they did when I was in the scene.

Oh, and try driving from Clay back to Glasgow after a ruined weekend , 450 miles at least, then at kendal on of the diesel injectors go at 1.30am .

that was a crap weekend ;)
