More than half of homes take more than they contribute

This leaflet is only a guide and does not cover every circumstance. We have done our best to make sure the leaflet is correct as of October 2010. Some of the information may be oversimplified, or may become inaccurate over time, for example because of changes to the law.

That is 4 years old. I'm talking from experience when we spoke to the job centre 3 months ago. So I'm afraid it is you that is wrong

Not quite? You are doing 'volunteer work' for your JSA?

Small gulf between earning money whilst you look for something more concrete and hopefully permanent, and slavery.

not if it doesn't pay minimum wage :p and good luck looking for a job whilst working one with bugger all income for travel expenses

And again we get hung up on JSA - the nice bubbles in the image above show how much of a non-issue JSA payments are.

The state pension is essentially untouchable to any party wanting to get elected, so the next things to deal with are in-work tax credits and housing benefit.

Possibly, yes. But any obstacles we can create for the purchase of luxuries rather than necessities is a worthwhile endeavour.

So because they are down and out and have lost their job for whatever reason, having paid into the system for years and years, you would begrudge them some "luxuries"?

Benefits are a safety net to catch you until you get back into work, when you lose your job companies don't stop asking for money. How are people supposed to pay bills with this "electronic debit card".

I guess in your eyes people who are on benefits should become depressed and eat bread and water because you don't think they deserve luxuries?

People who defraud or are otherwise a gaming the system are a drop in the ocean compared to genuine claimants, the amount of abuse people on benefits get is ridiculous, pointless screwing everyone over just to stop the single figure percentage of people who will still find ways to game the system anyway.

OCUK the only forum where every member only uses Private Healthcare, has never claimed a single benefit, those with children refuse Child Benefit and they also voluntarily pay extra tax and also do community service on the side, just to show they are better than everyone else (bar each other of course).

Heroes to a man.

obviously i can't argue with what you've been told but i do not believe for one moment that it applies to every single person. not allowing anyone on JSA to do volunteer work would be absolute madness.

No, I'm not happy about those who fiddle the system. But given those folks are such a tiny percentage of the overall cost (despite what the media would lead you to believe) I'm not going to lose sleep over them.

I have no issue with the state helping hard working families. I don't mind my tax going there after all a decent society supports those who need it. As for being punished for making poor life decisions. Well nobody is perfect and you shouldn't just write people off because they've made some bad choices.

Part of the problem. Pull the other one. Right wing sabre rattling is more of a problem if you ask me.

No, but in future generations this minority will get larger and larger unless it does get stopped. As already stated we already have a minority supporting the majority, we can't afford for this to get bigger otherwise severe consequences will come and quickly. (e.g. massive cut in benefits for all)

I have no issue with the state helping hard working families either, or people that are unfortunate and need the help (disabilities/ elderly/ etc.).

I'm not talking about writing people off because of bad choices, but people who get to the point that they are completely dependant on the state (excluding disabled/ elderly/ etc.) have probably either made numerous bad life choices, or the same one many many times.

It's this whole mentality that is slowly growing. It's ok, the state has my back. The state will look after me. The state will look after my kids. Yes, society should help those who need it, and having that saftey is nice. But you can't have people with the mentality of state dependance grow and grow and grow.

Straw man argument is straw man argument

I think people should spend their benefits on necessities, such as food and heating. Not luxury goods. It's as simple as that.

The only way to do that is screw everyone over and make it so that people are unable to survive on benefits alone......

Instead of clamping down on benefit claimants how about making it worthwhile to actually get a job, or get rid of Working Tax Credits.

A lot of people I know including friends and family claim Working Tax Credit as well as other credits, in this day and age you shouldn't need to claim benefits to top up your wage, if you can't live off minimum wage then get a job that sustains your lifestyle instead of loading up on loans and credit cards and using Tax Credits to cover it.

Not sure what is strawman about you tarring all people on benefits with same brush, just because someone has lost their job doesn't mean they can't have luxuries.

Reality is, if you want a job, you go out and you get one. Day after I turned 16 I was out with 100+ CVs selling myself to all the shops at Lakeside looking for part time work. Vowed not to come home until I had a job or atleast interviews. Left with 5 interviews, week later I was employed.

Could use the local library to print your CV for pennies if not free. Bus/ Train journey to nearest shopping center a few quid.

If you got the hunger to work then there is nothing stopping you.

Imagine 2.5m other people all doing the same thing, it's not like you had a unique idea.

It's not as easy as saying "well I did xxxx so you should be able to do xxx", when I was out of work I went to a job fair day run by a local MP, 200 people turned up at the start of the day for what was 5-6 stalls which included the police, the army and some university.

Not every town or area has loads of jobs to spare.

No I didn't have a unique idea. No my idea was not special. My idea was not complicated. My idea was not expensive. I got a job.

Was up Lakeside this weekend, loads of places advertising for staff. Not like there are no jobs out there. Be hungry for them.

Do you have a job now?

Unemployment benefit is one of the smallest benefits claimed, although, single parents claim Income Support rather than JSA so are not included in the unemployment statistics.

The main problem is that people aren't paid enough when they DO have a job to get them off income related benefits - Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits being the worst offenders.

Surely the government should stop subsidising employers by effectively topping up salaries using tax credits? A higher national minimum wage would go some way towards this, more akin to the living wage that's been proposed.

STFU! It's the poor peoples fault!

Yeah, and not because of the job fair or being "hungry" for work, I applied for at least 50+ jobs a week and I was lucky to get replies let alone interviews.

You weren't hungry for work but applied for 50+ jobs a week? Ok...

That's what I am talking about. Not people who apply for one/ two jobs, hear nothing then go 'Sirz, der no jerbz aat deeerz'

No such thing as luck when it comes to jobs. You make your own luck. 50+ appications a week, you earned the replies / interviews, you worked for them.

Give yourself some credit dude.

No I wasn't hungry for work, I quite enjoyed not having a lot to do, I just applied for the jobs I thought I could do.

No one can just apply for one or two jobs thesedays, Job Centre has checks in place and I had to do 20 "activities" a week and had to record them or I would be sanctioned.

You can't game the system anymore, people are getting sanctioned left, right and center which is why I am fed up of people crapping on the unemployed when they clearly don't have a clue.
