As title really.

Gonna finally buy myself a laptop because I'm likely to be away for a while. Ive seen a couple.

This http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-128-MS&groupid=959&catid=1828

and an Asus one specced :

ntel® Core™ i7-4700HQ Quad Core Processor
17.3" Full HD Screen
Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit
8GB DDR3 RAM
750GB HDD
DVD Rewriter
2GB Dedicated GTX 765M Graphics

As I see it the Asus has a much better processor and bigger screen, but a considerably worse graphics card if Im right?

I go away in 2 weeks time so it would need to be before then.

the msi with the a10 and the 290xm should be good, the 290xm is about as fast as a 7850 desktop chip so would play games pretty well, some games will be bottle necked noticeably by the a10 cpu but not many, overall you will probably get better performance with the msi than the asus

Kinda what I expected. Bit of a shame because the Asus looks much nicer physically and a lot less plastic, and it's 17 inch screen is probablybetter. It's main use will be Dota 2 to be honest. I doubt either would have issues with that.

Laptop market is complicated eh!

Another option to consider with Intel CPU,,, stock due to OCUK within next 2 weeks, will confirm date as soon as I can.

Regards,

Gigabyte UK NB Team

850m with DDR3.... EURGH.

Other than that glaring problem (and one I couldn't look past) it looks decent enough.

It's a shame there aren't many Intel and m290x combos about.

Just find one with a HD7970M or HD8970M, its the same thing after all.

This search for the perfect laptop is tricky. I've increased my budget to 1k if necessary to find the right one. But it seems that the current ranges are a bit weird.

Id want an i7 ideally, but they only come with the slower gfx cards. the m290x laptops all seem to be with a10 processors which are underpowered imo.

Quite frustrating really. I need the laptop by Friday night at latest :(

edit: oh i just read the part you said about 8970ms etc. So they are the same huh.. right.. now ill look again!

I've found this for under a grand. It seems good to me. What do ya think?

Well it depends on what purpose you want it for and what size.
MSI GX60 seems quite decent as it has dual storage - but too "gaming" look for me to be honest.
GIGABYTE P15F v2-CF1 is also an option and suits me more - capable on playing games and work/meeting etc.

Both decent - good luck ;)

One thing I'm noticing is most laptops seem to be 860ms but the 870m seems to be quite a bit better so it's forced my budget up. It's the first laptop I've bought and it's a much more complicated market than the desktop building one.

Certainly is! you're talking about a 40% difference in crysis 3! But you;re also looking at a good £200 increase for the GTX 870m.

Honestly, when you get a gaming laptop, and you;re going to keep it for a while, get the best you can afford. its not like a desktop where you can slum it on a GTX 850 for 2 months while you save for the GTX 880. Once you;ve picked it, thats that! So IF you can get the GTX 870m, then do! But if its wildly beyond what you can afford, you can still have a great time gaming in medium/high on the GTX 860m.

The MSI dominator is on for £1079 this week with GTX 870m, 3.8ghz i7 processor, 8 gb RAM, steelseries keyboard, 1920 x 2080 15.6" screen, 1Tb 7200 HDD, DVD rewriter and 2 year warranty!

Not a bad deal at all!

Damnit Ras, you make me push myself even more lol. I think Im gonna have to just settle on the one I specced at £955.

Its cheaper than the fancy branded ones and its quality will probably be quite noticeably worse, but its performance will match them for quite a bit less money.

Its a shame these new gigabyte ranges dont have graphics cards that appeal to me within budget.

No worries! I'm sure whatever you get, you'll spend the difference on Steam sales!!

Im almost about to pull trigger on an MSI dominator now. I just cant spend the cash until I know I'm getting as good as I can for my money. How frustrating lol.

The MSI laptops dont look very sleek or subtle but they do look like good value.

Shame ocuk arent offering a freebie with these ones :(

Ended up ordering a GT60 Dominator in the end. Over my budget by a huge amount but I know Ill be using it a lot.

I personally think the Ghost one looks a lot nicer but it was more expensive again and lacks the 870m which I decided I wanted.

I was forced to try somewhere else to get it a touch cheaper and with a free item, although as I'm writing this I should have probably tried to haggle ocuk over the phone as Ocuk are a better firm.

Just needed to order tonight really as I'm rushed :(

Will keep yas updated on how I feel when it arrives.
