Are these worth bothering with? I got a Gametel pad and play the old SNES games on my Android phone but I quite like the idea of some of the new 3DS games. Can you get the old SNES stuff for the 3DS via the market?

I bought my niece a 3DS quite some time ago which she loves. I wasn't too convinced about the 3D on it but I presume the larger screen XL does a better job?

Anyone here got one and would you care to comment on whether it's worth the money or whether I should just kludge along on my phone? :p

Mine got a shed load of use when I had a long commute, and it gets used on holiday, but it mostly gathers dust at the mo and I'm close to work. Great as handhelds go and a load of decent games.

Yeah I have a 45 min commute each way so was looking to do a bit of gaming when I'm not buried in a book. I doubt it'd get much use outside of that so the deciding factor is what the games are like really and how much less boring it'd make the train journey. :)

Personally love the DS/3DS series but as to whether one is worth it, is down to you.

  • You can't get SNES games on 3DS - just NES, Gameboy and Gamboy Colour games. Wii U does SNES and GBA games.
  • The big screens are great but the pixel density means you can see indidual pixels and see the blockines more easily that the smaller screens on the 3DS or 2DS.
  • Potentially true of other handhelds but even on the 3DS XL you can get hand cramps on certain games (MK7) although I've found a hard plastic shell case really helps. The only reason I mention this is becuase some people do like how comfortable the 2DS is but you lose the 3D obviously.
  • Personally I don't really bother with the 3D much, if at all. It's a nice feature but it ends up annoying me and I switch it off.
  • There are some big hitters on the system; Mario Kart 7, SM3D Land, Zelda: ALBW, Fire Emblem, Luigi's Mansion 2, Res Evil Relevations which are all brilliant. You also got some remakes like Zelda:OOT, Starfox, Donkey Kong Country Returns. You also got loads of other great games like NSMB2 or Mario Golf WT etc.

But if it's purely for 3D then I wouldn't. But if it's for a great, unique and expansive software library then yes absolutely.

The E-shop has NES, Gameboy/colour and Game Gear games, SNES stuff is on Wii U. There are a few 3D versions of some NES and Megadrive games but you wouldnt know it unless you search for them, the E-shop app is quite badly designed i feel, even compared to the one on Wii U. There are quite a few decent Indie games however.

I can't compare the 3d as i only have the xl but i find the effect varies between games and rarely have it on full, usually i have it just above minimum (as an example on Castlevania : Lords of shadow Mirror of Fate if i have it set to high i can see a ghost image of the game characters, like the 2 super imposed images are too far passed each other if that makes sense. Although it is quite a good game i hasten to add, a proper side scrolling platformer like Castlevania should be)

Overall i would say it's a decent system with quite a few great games, especially if you like platformers and JRPG's. The one drawback i feel is the lack of a second thumbstick although not really needed for most of the games. There is the circle pad pro but i read it has very limited compatbility with games ie it supports about 9 or 10 games.

Blimey Nintendo are missing out on a huge market by not providing the SNES stuff IMO.

I mostly play SNES stuff on my phone in all honesty.

I'll get down to a game shop and see if I can try one out - tbh the Zelda games are probably enough to make me justify the impulse purchase.
