What the right PDI

It all depends on what type of game you are playing and how much you will be able to control. I have my mouse on 3200 for RTS and strategy games but drop it down to 2000 for FPS as I just can't control the higher DPI with fast movements.

Theres a few things to look at.

What sort of mat youl be using lasers prefer hard surfaces opticals prefer cloth type surfaces.

Secondly the type of sensor not all are born equal not all give the options or quality you want

Thirdly is also locating a mouse that either does or doesnt support snapping depending on your preference.

Lastly once youve got all that dialed in and youve picked you prefered grip style then id normally go for the highest dps possible, the reason being is the software can always drop it down to a usable level.

Id recommend reading the sticky at the top of the page but basically dps max dps is the last thing you need to worry about.

Depends what you are comfortable with, I use 400dpi for fps and most other games.

Get a mouse that has different customisble dpi settings you can quick switch with.

i am useing an OcUK 3XL mat
I find when i play watch dogs there the mouse i have is a little twitchy and all over the place, but when i play titenfall it slow.

the mouse i have now is a cheap gigabyte M6900, it was a last min but after blowing my budget on other parts i built my system to find i had no mouse :p so i got it to put me on.

a friend as a R.a.t3 but i find it to been small in my hands and dont like that. i am looking for a larch mouse with some weight to it

It all depends on what you're comfortable with, on the surface that you're using. I'm currently at 1600DPI, but the mouse is capable of 8200DPI! :p

the style i would go for if i had to pick one of the two you posted is Mionix Avior, but to be honest i would have never of the two you posted. the only mouse i would have is SteelSeries or Roccat.

thanks for the advice. so what you ppl are saying is get the highest DPI any set budget will stretch to

I was watching a linus tech review of the logitech G605s, which is a wireless gaming mouse with 2500 DPI. And as he said, unless you're crazy fast with the mouse, most people would probably be happy with that speed! Has the arms race for dpi levels finished?

After all, if you want the most dpi, get the logitech proteus core. 12000 DPI. But you'll never use it that high! I'd second the call for roccat mice. they're very very good now days!

Snapping btw is where the mouse tries to "snap" your commands into a straight line if it thinks thats what you're trying to do. which makes sniper work on high dpi very difficult!

I recently went from 800DPI to 1600 DPI, been nearly 18 months and I didn't realise my mouse could go higher than 800DPI :o

I love my Logitech G500 to bits, using a Razer Goliathus mat. Although the G500 can go up to 5700DPI I currently find 3600DPI is the sweet spot for me at 1080p, and using the DPI up/down buttons to switch to my preset of 1800DPI or 900DPI for for things that require more precision such as some work in Photoshop that requires steady hands or occasionally sniping in games.

Yup.
I have games where the mouse is really twichy in-game, but slows right down even in that same game's menu!

Easy solution - Find the DPI you're happiest with for general usage, ie in Windows, Office, File Manager and whatever else you use your PC for. Then add a number of settings either side of that and assign one mouse button to cycle through them.
I run 1080p on an OCUK XXL mat and both my mice are set to about 2500DPI. I can go up two increments to around 3000 or down to around 1600. This is a pretty low setting, though.

However, I 'claw' my mouse, as in my wrist never moves from that spot and I move the mouse with fingers alone. This means small movement on the mouse translates to pretty large movement on-screen, which usually requires a fairly high DPI.
If you like to make lots of wide movements across the mat, you'll usually have a lower DPI.

Both my CM Storm Inferno and my Logitech G700S can each go up to something like 8500DPI!!

Basically, play around until you find something you're comfortable with. As mentioned, the more important aspects centre around what feels most comfortable for you (try some out in your 'local PC shop', if you can) and what features best fit your requirements.
Most gaming peripherals are about enhancing and tailoring your personal experience, rather than offering any notable in-game advantages. Some people are happy with just a very basic mouse.

i was looking at the Roccat Kone Pure Core but didn't get chance to buy and its now on offer for £30:D is there any reason why i should not get one?

It's a very nice mouse. Fits large hands quite nicely too... reminds me of a executive car. I went to buy one myself once, but didn't look close enough at the box I picked up and bought the Kova [+] by accident.
However, I do often hear of the surfacing on Roccat mice deteriorating quite rapidly... My own Kova is looking pretty awful.

5600 here, love sensitivity, although it does make me terrible in fps.

i'd have thought screen res would come into play, 5600dpi isn't as bad as youd think when there's 5040 pixels to go sideways.
