Hi,

I have a 2008 Mondeo 2008 Titanium X with the Convers+ display.

Yesterday I noticed that the perspex covering the speedometer display was cracked. I've no idea how as I only ever touch it to clean it so I can only assume it is a 'stress' fracture.

Being as obsessive as I am, there's no way I can live with it although it's looking like I may have to as Ford want £1000 for a new one! Apparently, they don't sell that cover in isolation and therefore I would need a new instrument cluster.

To me, that sounds crazy but I cannot find any alternatives having performed a cursory search of local salvage dealers.

Does anyone have any ideas how I may source a replacement? The cover looks like it comes off with a bit of persuasion but two Ford dealers have stated that it's a full instrument cluster replacement.

buy a cluster from a breaker. no idea on cost but i would imagine a few hundred. you'll then need to get this coded to your car, best place to ask on that would be somewhere like talk ford as quite a few people over there have swapped clusters from non plus to convers+ and so on

You may well be able to just swap the perspex cover from a s/h cluster without having to fit the instruments themselves and the hassle of coding etc. If you take your cluster out and have a look it should be obvious if it's just clipped on or bonded.

as above i'd be tempted to try replacing the perspex first, id assume the perspex is the same between converse+ and poverty spec clusters

AND if it is simply clipped in you could try making a new one or getting one laser cut for you for cheap

Usually double sided bead and metal clips.

This is usually the best fix for a cracked cluster screen.

I'd do this. Even most secondary schools these days have a laser cutter good enough to cut the thickness of perspex that you would need.

If it is a simple flat design without any moulded in clips/beads etc. then it should be doable.

Such a design doesn't exist though of course, they are always curved and have a lip with clips on. Get another one from a breaker, for an 08 Mondeo this will be very easy to find.

Many thanks to you all for the replies.

I've sent email enquiries to a variety of salvage dealers but I'm not hopeful. You would be astonished how difficult it is to find one! I thought I was in luck earlier but the Mondeo without Convers+, typically, is a completely different design.

A colleague did mention about having one made up but, without taking it off (I'm fearful of doing that and being unable to reattach it), it looks like there is a plastic 'shroud' which surrounds a separate display but forms part of the same piece which may be difficult to work around.

You could have a look on www.fordownersclub.com for some more info on anybody having carried out a repair.

I'd suspect not if it's clipped and bonded on and the screen isn't available as a part from Ford but some people come up with imaginative fixes for lots of things like that.
