A controversial scientist who carried out provocative research on making influenza viruses more infectious has completed his most dangerous experiment to date by deliberately creating a pandemic strain of flu that can evade the human immune system.

Be a shame if that virus got released (if it actually exists, not entirely convinced by a scientist who obviously craves notoriety).

What with this and the Ebola outbreak in West Africa that the WHO is concerned is out of control, I can't help but hear Jeff Goldblum's chilling words from Jurassic Park; "nature always finds a way" though maybe it needs a little bit of help from us sometimes.

Scary what people create sometimes.

On the other end of the spectrum they are trying to create new antibiotics because our bodies are getting resistant to them :/

if the WHO was concerned about ebola they should have had this meeting their holding this week about 2-3 weeks ago, now it will be a committee meeting and sod all action for a few more weeks. gotta love the way the WHO drags its feet of late. its nearly as bad as the UN

Err no, antibiotics don't work that way

As for the guy creating it.. what a moron, has he never seen Survivors?!?!?!

They had to wait for the groupies to setup for the gig.

Yeah I would be all too surprised if it gets out or is purchased by some undesirables.

Sometimes science goes too far.

Look at him casually standing in his lab without any protection. Seal him in it just incase :D

As long as its not you or your family that's culled right?

Heck I know some members of my family the world would be better off without. Maybe myself included haha.

Regardless I don't think a virus has been developed to wipe out specific classes yet so its pretty much going to take what it can get. The hardest part to enact a cull of humans who how to decide who is no longer worth their resource usage, I couldn't do it.

I'm not convinced until his paper gets peer-reviewed, there's currently no proof that the strain he selected in the lab has the all the tools needed to infect humans. This guy made some headlines a few years ago, he's probably more committed to being in the spotlight rather than to do proper research.
