Heya guys, So I bought a MSI mobo for once. I've never bought anything MSI so the company is new to me. I feel people miss this great value for money when it comes to other companies like Asus and Gigabyte.

Anyway it came into the mail yestarday with a lovely box :B Along with my new cpu, Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon).

Out of the box I must admit its one very sexy looking motherboard, Very neat and well laid out. Well worth the 128 quid I paid on sale.

So, getting it all stuffed into my computer and boot it up I did have one very annoying issue. The debug LCD, which displays error codes ( EVERY MOBO NEEDS THESE) said there wasn't ram installed. I quickly drilled it down to one of the water cooling bolts touching the motherboard and shorting out two of the ram slots. So anyone with a custom loop that gets a error of 55, PLEASE check that nothing is shorting out the board. Apart from that it boots right up with no error codes and I've never had a issue thus this far.

Of course, This is a very early review I may add more as time goes on.

Anyway, Bios is very easy to use, very fast and I have no trouble with it at all. I know some people hate it but I don't see the problem with it. Went into memory and clicked XMP for my ram, Set it to 1866mhz and bang on the right timings with no problems and no errors in memtest. So again, Better than what I had with my asus and gigabyte boards!

So, Now that I've settled in with it. I'll need to see what this motherboard can take overclocking wise. I'd love to see my CPU upto 5ghz and I believe it's quite possible considering my cooling set up.

Anyway, As I said before I believe this motherboard is very underlooked and should be considered next to asus and gigabyte mobos! Very very happy with my buy and I heard the RMA service for MSI is quite good, So there's another plus!

I'll most likely report back when I start overclocking this cpu and see how it goes. Cheers.

I know it is unrelated but I recently bought my first MSI motherboard, the z97 Gaming 7. I too have had Gigabyte boards, but I find my MSI really nice.

I really like the pure black PCB, it really blends in well with my case.

I'm a MSI fanboy, and I think they're boards are great, i've got a Z77 Mpower and its a great looking board, bios is simple to use, love it.
I fully agree, I'm mulling over buying the MSI Z97 MPower Max AC, has everything I really need.

I'll probally make a cheeky thread for the boards if I do.

Built with three MSI boards.

Z87 MPower Max.

2 x Z87i ITX.

Issues encountered:

Live Update scan returns some wrong results (says you haven't got the latest driver/utility when you actually do).

A utility for the MPower Max called Lucid Virtu was buggy and caused crashes.

Solutions:

Go to website and read info and dates on drivers/utilities and install them manually, if they are newer.

Uninstall Lucid Virtu.

Pros:

Everything else. No other issues encountered so far.

I have a sound blaster Z Card, but took out my LED's as they really annoyed me. I'm going for a dark build, and it coming along nicely.

I tend to have my system on 24/7 as it F@H for here at OCUK.

I have had a Gigabyte Mobo before and for me it wasn't a good experience, and I thought trying MSI was a good idea, and I have to say I like the experience so far.

This is a great board I agree. Efficient in 3d and great for tuning RAM too. I used it for Heaven single GPU world record whilst benching in Taiwan very stable with R290 at 1600+ Core 1740 mems.

How do you remove it? Am tempted to but dont want to short anything.

Glad you like. Am sorry I didn't go with the xpower version over the Gigabyte g1 be.

Don't know what was thinking at time, but the xpower seems like a better featured board, and at a lower price as well.

Think it was the only exception week testing at factory that may have swung it, which mean nought in the end because I had problems with their latest bios...

Good luck on your 5ghz aim!

Basically what you do is, remove the red cover, and then you will see the two LED's, one on the bottom, and one on the top. Bend them up so they are straight, use some pliers (I used scissors :p) and snip them off, reassemble the card, ad bam, no LED's. :)

Not lucky enough to grab the power series, but went for the z97i gaming Msi in my latest itx build and it's rocking. Can't recommend them enough. Clocks very well and handles the ram excellently. I am happy with my buy and would happily choose msi again.

The old bad name they once had is a thing of the past.
