Hey guys,

After a new monitor and I was just wondering if I NEED 1440p at 27"?

I'm not as massively into gaming as I used to be, so am not that fussed about being on the cutting edge with everything on Ultra.

So basically, will 1080p on a 27" monitor be that bad for someone who does mainly web browsing and the odd few hours of DayZ etc.?

Cheers guys, the other thought I've had is I don't want to plough too much money into a new PC so if I went for 1440, I take it I'd have to stump up extra for improved graphics to run at that res?

27" 1440p is fine for browsing I have not had any scaling issues on my AOC or Dell. Tbh I'm not sure why you would. Things can be a bit smaller as it's a higher res but easily sorted with a bit of zooming.

1440p is also good as you can run two 1280 pages side by side without having to zoom around like you do on 1080.

Monitor's size and resolution are only part of the equation. Viewing distance and own eye-sight play a critical role, too.

I'm myself using a 42" HDTV (1080p) from 1m distance. Just make sure your viewing distance is slightly more than the monitor's diagonal size (*), and you should be good to go with 1080p. If it's too blocky, then increase the viewing distance a little. If it's blocky even from 2x the diagonal, then you should indeed consider 1440p.

(*):
The basis for this is that this is the recommended minimum viewing distance before you have to physically move your head to see what's happening on the screen. In other words, it becomes "too immersive". You can get somewhat closer (0.8x) for some tasks, like web browsing. For gaming, 1x is quite minimum. For movies, 2x is more recommended.

You don't need 1440p for Internet. Not worth it tbh. 1080p is more then enough.

I'm interested in this too.

Currently I use a 22" at 1680x1050. When browsing / using Office I find that text looks jagged and unpleasant on the 22", probably now I'm used to phone/tablet screens.

I'd really like a 27", but if it's 1080p then surely text is going to look worse than on my current 22"? It'll only have 30 more vertical pixels but everything will be much bigger. Maybe the sensible choice is a 1080p 24" - I have this at work and text looks much better than on my 22" for some reason.

Can people comment more on the scaling issues with 27" 1440p? I thought the zoom function worked pretty well on Chrome/Office apps - are the scaling issues with UI elements or with content as well?

All the 27" 1080p monitors I've own look great ,but yes 1440p does look better.

I own 3 of them and I don't have any scaling or sizing issues with web browsing.

Same here no problems using 1440 for browsing. :)

Once you go 1440 there is no going back.

I have a 27" 1080p Iiyama ProLite E2773HS myself and it is utterly wicked at everything I throw at it, no problem!!
I can see the stark difference when I use the 27" 1440p screens my friends have and I can see how cool 4K looks. If I were rich I might buy one... but the 1080 is still all shades of awesome and most are cheap enough to leave money for building a really decent rig.
