Why don't more of you ride bikes?

If 50% of people rode my commute it would absolutely ruin the lovely country road parts :P. Also half of them would probably be dead after a week or two.

Stop spoiling my Genius idea. :p

Weird reading through seeing loads of Blokes saying they are to scared to ride a bike. I do understand people with young kids & family responsibilitys not riding bikes though.

One thing I will say to help describe what I get out of risking life & limb by riding a bike is that for me my Bike is a Time Machine that takes me back to feelings I got when I was 17.
Being totally Free & having every road in the World just in front of your front tyre is a feeling you just cannot get from anything else.
Then there is the power & acceleration controlled just by the slightest movement of your right wrist.
Then there is the involvement of gripping the bike with your knees tucking forward & down & dipping into a bend at speed.
Getting bend after bend just right, sitting the bike on it's rear wheel as you push on to the next bend, **** I could go on forever about the joy I feel riding a bike.

Went and did the CBT had a try of a few bikes and just did not enjoy it so did not go any further. For me cars are what I enjoy along with Helicopters :D

1. Because I'd die. Even if I turned out to be good at it, I'd be paranoid someone would pull-out on me or something.

2. I'd still need a car so the bike would be an outright cost and any saving on fuel I might make, probably wouldn't cover half the bike insurance, never mind tax, maintenance and buying the bike in the first place.

I would love to ride, but the fear of death / debilitating injury is enough to put me off the idea at the moment.

When my kids are older and I have less dependencies, I'd like to hope I'll give it a try!

People that work in the Casualty Department call Bikers - "Organ Donors" + :p

I ride an SV650S which is as a result of my license restricted to 47bhp :(

It's funny pulling up at a set of lights through, knowing full well that any car at the lights, and almost any car under £100000, my £5000 bike could beat them off the line without question.

Plus, filtering. How many of you can say that you wouldn't like the capability to filter through traffic.

And having the ability to go from say, 20-70 in a few seconds if needed, with a short twist of the wrist.

Again, all this, restricted to just 47bhp

They are slow in corners and un forgiving. I like to drive at 10 10ths and would be dead if I had a bike

For me, the ability to park my car up at a shop/restaurant/pub etc and be in normal clothes plus be able to put my shopping in the boot far outweighs this

They aren't that much slower through corners, it's the brakes where the biggest difference is, but it's all moot, you don't feel like you are going slow in corners or on the brakes, and I've never had any hot hatches or similar actually keep up int the twisties, but then the reward of riding close to the limit on a bike is amplified massively as you are much more exposed on the bike, perched on it, with nothing holding you in, in terms of 'enjoyment' it's on a whole new level.

Most people I know with bikes have a car for those occasions.. For most, a bike is a weekend/road-track toy.. they are cheap to insure/tax and don't loose much value, yet can slay any supercar...

Is it worth the risk?

When I'm driving my car around it's not unusual to feel like I'm watching out for other drivers more than making an error myself. Seems a little silly to remove the metal shell surrounding me in that scenario while I speed around insensibly.

That, along with my love for adrenaline with mountain biking definitely scares me to think what I'd risk after becoming comfortable on a motorbike.

Luckily I never really need much shopping and if i do, i'm a 5 minute walk from Tesco. There's no doubt cars are more practical for moving stuff, but IMO, and in my current circumstances, the positives of a bike much outweigh the positives of a car. Obviously this'll change at some point though and I'll get a car, but until then :p

Get a wife, she can do the shopping. Get a life, buy a bike.

Unfortunately I no longer can say I did the last bit recently, but shopping is for the birds.

(Unless it is interesting stuff and thats what couriers are paid for).

There's a neat comparison of how bikes perform against powerful cars in the motors youtube thread on here - last couple of minutes ;)

I'm a massive bike fan myself, i currently own a '93 Honda CBR1000F & a 2003 Triumph TT600 - had a full bike license since i was 17 - i'm 36 now and only held a car license for 3 years!!

I've also owned in the past, RD350, CBR600, VFR400, YZF750R, ZX7R, ZZR1100, Aprilia RS250, Triumph Sprint 1050ST, ZZR1400 & TL1000R.

I also love all aspects of bike racing - MotoGP, Superbikes, Motocross, Speedway etc.

I'm doing a bit of rennovation work on my CBR1000F at the moment, i've recently gave her an oil change, the front farings off to do a bit of cleaning, and hoping to change the coolent tomorrow (had a bit of a leak but found out it was a split hose going from the radiator to the expansion bottle!)

Simple answer.. other road users not paying attention. Ive had a couple of non fault accidents over the last 25 years where the other road user clearly wasnt paying attention and my car was written off, I have no doubt I would have been seriously injured or even killed if I'd been on a bike.

I'll stick with my German saloon car with multiple air bags ;)

Given a choice I'd pick a car every time. Its no fun in the wet/cold or trying to do your shopping on a bike. Plus a car is a lot more comfortable which becomes more of a priority as you get older

It's because we are so hard & like to skip about at a Bazillion miles an hour knowing that we are going to Die in the face any second. We are like Honey Bees buzzing around the cars using all our energy in one go. :D

Seriously though I hope I haven't come over with any kind of complex, I can happily say that 80% of Bikers are real friendly sociable chaps.
The others are usually **** heads on sports bike who really are going to die any second. + :p
