Faulty Asus HD 7970 Matrix Platinum

To be fair, I understand over clockers position and I wouldn't expect them to have to fund the card because asus would not accept it. They have sent the card back to me next day delivery at their cost so thanks to them for that as they didn't have to, it's all Just a bit annoying !
Anyway lesson learned, I will take a great deal more care when removing protective packaging, and also as I pretty much had the glitches from day one ( but just thought it was the drivers or the game ) will be quicker to question and ram within the 30 day window.
I ordered some heat sinks and the card should be back with me Monday, so once the heat sinks arrive I shall fit them and keep you all posted on the results.
If that fails I will try under clocking the ram and see what happens.
On the plus side, if the heat sinks work I might well try over clocking and see how fast I can get it ;-)

Thanks for your opinions guys

Hi guys, just an update.

Received the card back on Tuesday and the heat sinks i ordered yesterday, so this morning I tried.
Removed fan top, fitted the four heatsinks with a little bending and coaxing ( so that they did not touch the heat pipes ) , cleaned up the old thermal paste and applied some new arctic silver 5 paste to the gpu then re screwed together.
Put back into my rig and tested, fur mark running at 81 degrees max with fans at 40 percent now, also used gpu tweak to check ram temp and it only got to 60 degrees so looking good.
Ran criysis 3 where it artifacted before and not a blip in sight so so far I am very happy!!
Will keep you posted as I try other games.

My warnings that i was banned for multiple times has fallen upon deaf ears, and now some of you get to suffer... :(

15 pages of complaints. Seems to be an issue with the memory overheating, maybe an issue with the way the PCB is layered. Elpida memory on these.

I had heard they weren't meant to be great TBH

could be worse my platy went pop after a fortnight :(

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Dont listen to that idiot Rangerjr1, all he does is open his big mouth and talk trash he cant possibly have anything positive to contribute with. Lets give him a ban for bothering to argue with people for their own good when they want to buy a 7970 Matrix.

OP, you seem to have solved it for now. But all i can suggest for the future is STAY AWAY FROM CUSTOM PCBs ON AMD. Just get the reference cards with a good cooler, if clocking is your thing then AMD ref cards are VERY good, let me put 1.63v through my ref 290x and its one of the fastest 290xs out there on water if not THE fastest, same with my 7970, only its second or third or something. Anyways the point is that AMD cards doesnt really benefit from custom PCBs like Nvidia does. AMD ref PCBs is as good as its gonna get for any use except MAYBE LN2. Even on LN2 ref cards are sufficient.

As I've already mentioned in this thread I've never had a problem with my 7970 Matrix Platinum, but it appears a few people have. After a bit of research it appears that there are four memory modules on the card that don't have any heatsinks on them, and after a little more research I came across this fix for that very problem...

Browsing the Overclockers website it doesn't appear they stock the Zalman ZM-RHS1 VGA Heatsinks but they do have these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-038-AL
Which I think will actually be better as chances are, if you use the low profile heatsinks in that pack you won't have to bend any of the fins like the guy did the in video.

Just thought I'd share it as if you can't get it repaired under warrenty (because of the Serial Number sticker), it looks like you'll have to take matters into your own hands and repair it yourself.

I have a Asus 280x Matrix Platinum so ...the same card ;)

These cards chuck a lot and I mean a lot of heat out from the side so if you can put a fan on the side of your case drawing the heat out.

I see you have already done the heatsinks mod but the fan made the biggest difference to the running of my card.

You were not banned multiple times simply for warning people about this card and you know it.
