Some great deals to be had. Tempted to set my PS3 back up and pick a few games up.

Anyone who hasn't played Demon's Souls needs to buy it for £3.99. It'll be the best £4 you'll ever spend, the game is amazing.

I downloaded Dark Souls 1 as part of Xbox Live's free game this month and I'm not sure about it, seems like a dodgy Skyrim in that it appears to be needlessly complicated.

Is Dark Souls a sequel to Demon Souls? Is it worth trying Demon Souls instead, or continue with Dark Souls for a bit?

Demon's souls is well worth the price. Have just stayed playing through it properly after shelving it some time ago. Sure, it's harsh but it makes you learn from your mistakes.

I wouldn't say Dark Souls is complicated, it just doesn't hold your hand as you play the game. It's brutal, it's difficult, and it's brilliant.

Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls (made by the same company), so if you don't like Dark Souls you won't like Demon's Souls either. Shame for you really, they really are some of the most rewarding game experiences you'll ever find.

Demon's>Dark :p

Both awesome though. Still not played DSII. It'll probably end up being the last 60+ hour PS3 game I play so I will pick the right time to pick it up.

* Souls = :mad:

I can't be doing with roguelike stuff where you have to fight the same things over and over again.

I'm sure it rewarding but when games are brutal without being particularly fun it makes me want to rage quit.

It takes a great team and studio to create a game that's intriguing, fun, difficult and challenging but only to the point where you want to improve yourself and continue.

I'm also not all that keen on the graphical style, it feels generic and somewhat without character.

I enjoy challenges don't get me wrong, I am ranked the in the top 3,000 players of Trials HD's "Inferno II", it took me months to achieve that. The difference being I wanted to do it.

I'll give Dark Souls another go but if a game doesn't grip me within the first hour or so it normally means it isn't going to.

It took Dark Souls three attempts for me to get to grips with it and power on. Then I got to Anor Londo and my hard drive crashed. Lost all my saves and just couldn't be bothered going back to it. I simply wasn't finding it any fun at all. Stressful as hell and just as rewarding when you finally beat that boss that was giving you trouble, but the fun factor is just absent for me.

Thanks for the heads up on the sale, OP. Just grabbed Ni No Kuni and a few other bits. :)

You've actually just described the Souls games perfectly in my eyes. To me, the Souls games require a certain mindset and an appreciation of what the developers are doing with the game. Because the game isn't linear, you need to be aware and ready for the little clues you find in the game to keep you heading in the right direction. You might go into a new area and find that you get absolutely spanked by the enemies there. This isn't the game being cheap, or overly difficult. This is a message from the devs - you're not ready for this area yet, go away and come back later.

The Souls games are one of the few games that are genuinely challenging without ever really being cheap about it. With only a few very rare exceptions, if you die in the Souls games, it's not because the game has been unfair or cheap. It's simply because you weren't good enough yet, or you made a mistake. That's what I find so enjoyable and rewarding about the games. During my first playthrough I struggled a lot at times, but I persevered, I improved, and I overcame. Now I could run through Dark Souls and I'll only die due to a lack of concentration on my part. That's good game design IMO.

I'll give Dark Souls another go but if a game doesn't grip me within the first hour or so it normally means it isn't going to.

If you're going to do that I'd give it longer than an hour to be honest. Your first 30 minutes will be spent escaping the Undead Asylum, and after that you'll reach Firelink Shrine. From there you can easily spend another 30 minutes trying to go into different areas, dying because you're not ready for them yet, and getting frustrated. If you do start again, I'd suggest asking on here for some guidance if you feel yourself stuck, or just in need of a pointer. t's definitely one of those games that the more you understand it, the more you enjoy it.

Cheers for the overview, you've actually made me want to go back and try again.

I'm going to load up my save tonight and give it another shot and see how I fair! I got the game for free so I might as well :)

Is Dark Souls II better? Is it necessary to complete DS1 to move onto 2, or recommended?

Personally I'd avoid DS2, mechanically its better but its nowhere near the experience of the first two games from what I've seen (while I say that it's still better than the majority of games released). Play DeS and DS though...

Anyone that has trouble getting into DS would get a better idea if they watch the Kay plays series - she plays it from a POV of not knowing anything about Souls games and its quite refreshing - just watch enough not to spoil and avoid YT comments

Anyone else finding this a bit troublesome? I have No No Kuni and Demon's Souls ready to checkout, just trying to get FF VII and VIII for £3.99 like they're supposed to be but they seem to be £7.99 each! Damnation.
