Dolby and DTS for Complete Digital Home Experience
Besides delivering impressive audio quality, the Xonar D2X is also packed with multiple sound technologies from Dolby and DTS to deliver outstanding entertainment experiences. These include
Dolby Digital Live: Converts PC or game audio content into Dolby Digital in real-time
Dolby Headphone: Creates a surround sound listening experience when using any set of headphones
Dolby Virtual Speaker: Delivers a vibrant surround sound listening experience from stereo speakers
Dolby Pro Logic® IIx: C reates up to 7.1-channel surround sounds from stereo or 5.1 sources
DTS Connect: Includes DTS Interactive and DTS NEO:PC
DTS Interactive for real time AC-3 encoding and
DTS NEO: PC stereo to multi-channel expander

From what I can see it comes down to what has the better Audio chip. The D2X has DTS, the other Dolby.
ROG supports GX 3.0 vs 2.0 I found this to be more trouble than its worth on my D2X.

Phoebus is more aimed at gamers, whereas the D2X is more a card for HTPC. The D2X has no front case audio header, so any headphone or headset need to be connected to the card directly. As you will have speakers connected, this will mean you will need to use a switcher to connect both simultaneously. A splitter could be used, but really isn't ideal. The Phoebus has separate headphone and stereo or front speaker connections, so no splitters/switcher/swapping needed. Not sure the extra £30 is worth it over the Phoebus Solo, which is the same card, just without the control module.

thanks.. the extra £30 isnt really a problem as i have already bought this STX which cost me £120.. so am guessing the phoebus is possibly the better answer i need :) thanks

I'm still not seeing why you need to send the STX back.
Have you got a set of speakers in mind? If not then just ensure that when you do pick a set, they have optical or coaxial SPDIF.
Are you looking at using a "true surround" headset? If so you're probably going to be better off getting one that works through it's own USB dongle.
If you're looking at virtual surround (most headsets) then the STX already does 8 channel surround via Dolby Headphone and the Phoebus is going to be exactly the same.

Far as I know you cant get a True Surround headset with USB. There all Virtual.

A true Surround as a jack for each channel. etc

shankly already mentioned before if i had optical speakers the sound card would run surround.. but if i was to send it back and get either a d2x or phoebus then that saves me buying new speakers and the logitech x530 5.1 would do me for now so am just not too sure whether to go phoebus with headphone amp or d2x with dts..

Neither, I chose the STX because I'm not interested in surround speakers. :D

In your position, I'd probably go for the Phoebus as it has the added feature of a decent headphone amp should it be needed in the future.

To be honest since I wrote this, ive took another Uturn (after looking up reviews) have decided on keeping the STX and then gonna buy a very good speaker system in a few weeks.. Just need as my other thread states, good headphones at around £180 so i get possibly full potential of sound card!

STX would be my money everytime. :)

Don't think except for the STX II anything touches it. Even for gaming.
