So I haven't played games since the original doom and Duke nukim on my 486 dx2 66. I stopped playing them as I would get headaches after about 20 minutes. Probably due to the blocky jumpy graphics back then.

I have just built a intel i5 3570 with a Hd6970 card with a 480gb ssd and 16gb ram. It seems like this setup should be OK for some gaming? I have no speakers connected so would need some sorta basic speaker setup. What would you recommend?

I used to be into doom, Prince of persia, Sega rally and some f1 stuff. Things have obviously moved on. What would you guys recommend me trying out to see if gaming is for me? Something that's easy to get into? Also what is steam? I see else talking about games and steam. Is that we're you download or purchase games. I really have no idea. Lol Cheers des.

Steam is where you buy your games from now. Well, most of them. Get it downloaded and it will present you with a shop. It has friends lists and communities on it and everything.

I would recommend War Thunder as it is free to play but a great looking game. Planes and tanks.

steam is just as you described. It's basically a game library on your computer which you can purchase games through and it will download them and then keep them up to date for you. pretty handy! on that note "Origin" and Uplay" are similar but EA and Ubisoft run (so only has their games).

I'd probably start there and have a browse through the library and see what takes your fancy :)

if you're thinking about a game you can also check for gameplay videos on youtube or twitch.tv (streaming service where people show themselves playing games) and see the game in action. :)

Ok I will install steam tonight. As for hardware my setup should be OK for games? Would headphones be OK to get started? I haven't a great Internet connection. About 12meg down and 0.8 meg up bt infinity. Should that me Ok? Cheers des.

Don't forget about good old games. Unlike pretty much every other game distributor they don't have any DRM whatsoever; you just download the game, install it, then do whatever you want with it (like install it on multiple computers).

There's also the humble store and humble bundles if you want some indie games (although they do have some non-indy games too).

As for specific games to recommend, what genres would you say you;re interested in? Judging by your list I can see you like racing games, but would you say you're more into realistic racing simulators, arcade racing games like burnout, or something in between?

Lastly, I'm sure everyone else can provide a list as long as your arm of the great games you have missed since you stopped playing PC games all those years ago if you want

Should be fine for pretty much everything. It isn't really bandwidth that you need, but a good ping.

Headphones probably give you an advantage over normal speakers since you can work out what directions sounds are coming from far more accurately than with normal speakers (unless you have surround sound). The only problem you might have is using a microphone and headphones at the same time, since wearing them together is pretty difficult.

Start off with some free to play stuff, Planetside 2, TF2, World of Tanks etc etc.

If you go for free to play, make sure you get the good F2P games, which are few and far between. The vast majority of F2P games are really 'free to wait' or 'pay to play' where you have to pump ridiculous amounts of money into the game to remove wait timers, or get yourself credits that allow you to play the game, or buy in game stuff to reduce the monumental amounts of grinding you would need to do to progress in the game.

However, the games Ayahuasca has posted are all from that rare category of good F2P games without any of that rubbish (and are genuinely good games)

Ok guys thanks for all the help. I will get going and try some free stuff out. I really don't know what I will like until I try it I suppose. At 35 am I too old and slow? Is a keyboard and mouse Ok to get going or should I get a joystick setup. That brings back memories, getting a 8 bit soundblaster card with a midi port to plug in a joy stick! Take it they are all usb now.

Cheers des.

Any FPS you've played on a console will be far superior on PC also I recommend RPG's like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Deus Ex(excluding II: Invisible War), Bioshock(Excluding 2) & System Shock Series also if you can find it play the Original Unreal most definitely the best FPS ever made for PC!

35?! yeah, sell the pc mate.... it's game over :p

of course I jest :D

keyboard and mouse is fine. joystick (flight controls) can be useful for most flying sims, if you like that thing. but for some games that have flying, battlefield for example, I find keyboard and mouse easier just due to the flight characteristics.

think I used mouse and keyboard for war thunder and such..... just makes aiming that much easier really...so probably a better place to start ;) (using a joystick will give more of the "flying" feel to the game... but unless you're pretty good with it then then mouse is just that much more accurate).

for racing games I recommend a wheel but as they are expensive... I'd get a controller first just to play some games and see if they are your cup of tea, but if you hunt about you can get decent second hand wheels for reasonable prices :) on that note, a few friends and myself have bought "Assetto Corsa", it's a racing game that's still currently under development but you can buy it and play on it (but some features don't work, bugs, etc etc) but we're really enjoying it. did play iracing, which was awesome but it was a monthly cost and you'd have to buy additional tracks and cars..... and it's very much for the competitive as it revolves around ranked races and cups.

a good source of games are the humblebundle. this is basically a site where you can donate a value you feel like paying to this company, and they give it to certain charities and you get Steam CD-keys to redeem. usually to get the better games in the bundle you have to donate a minimum of £5... but you get about 6 games....so worth checking out as you might get a great deal on a game you've had your eye on. (they do weekly and daily deals i believe :) )

also a decent headset is worth it imho. speakers are cool but then you have to factor in other things like if you have other people living with you or neighbours who complain about any noise after 6pm :p also if you're planing on playing with friends using some voice communications then they'll get a bit peeved hearing your game audio coming back through the mic (and themselves). headset negates these issues :)

Dude I'm 36 and I can thrash most people on virtually all the games I play. Besides, games are about having fun, and that's not something age should ever be a factor in.

Get Steam, add me as a (new steam friend!!) friend and get TF2. Then I'll teach you how to be an awesome medic - you'd get used to keyboard/mouse controls in an awesomely fun game... and you don't have to have really quick reactions to heal people mostly.

Then we can swap over and I'll heal you while you get used to other classes. Fun!

No you can't. You wouldn't stand a chance against me*

*I'm not sure I have any evidence whatsoever to back this up.

Once you start to use the keyboard and mouse, you'll wish that the Xbox and PS supported them.

You can use the Xbox / PS controllers on the PC but at the moment, I don't believe you can use the Pro Wii controllers.

Just to add to this, from what I have heard the PS controllers are a lot more difficult to get working than the wired xbox controllers, which just need to be plugged in and will work with a good amount of games.

Also, someone suggested iRacing and mentioned that you have to pay for every little thing, but I don't think he emphasised just how expensive it really is. We are talking in the hundreds of pounds to be able to play a decent variety of tracks and cars for more than a few months.

yeah I could have said that a bit more. :p people have sunk 100's, some 1000's into iracing just to unlock different cars and tracks to play on. bascially each car/track is around £15 I think.... they give discount on bulk buys (like 6 items at once) but still..... silly money tbh. :p but as they sell themselves.... it is more for the serious racing sim player. I couldn't be bothered to keep paying for it after a few months :p

ps3 controllers are easy to set up for the pc :) but i imagine xbox might be easier as it's microsoft.

can do both wired and wireless (need a cheapo bluetooth adapter). just need software like "motionjoy" which will install the drivers for the controller (supports xbox too I believe) and also for your bluetooth dongle (i think), then you select what you would like the PC has connected to it. so if you have a ps3 controller and the game you want to play has built in support for and xbox360 controller, you just select the xbox360 controller option from the motionjoy menu and BOOM! you ps3 controller is now an xbox one and works with the game.

I did this for GRID 2 and test drive unlimited 2 (racing games) and it worked great :)

Ok guys I have installed steam and am installing war thunder. I changed the settings to install this on my Unraid nas is that OK. Games look kinda big. Will leave it downloading and tell you how I have got on. Headphones are at the ready!

So I'm downloading flat out at 1.3MB second and have added war thunder, planet side 2 and team fortress 2 to the list. It will be about 6 hours until it's finished so I will leave it running overnight. Anything else I should add to the list of free stuff while I'm waiting. Any good free car games? Cheers guys
