I am actually asking on behalf of someone I know who is very keen on buying one in the next couple of weeks. I popped along with him yesterday to a main dealership and we test drove a 2.2ltr diesel and the 2.0 Ecoboost (presumably petrol?)

My question is, which engine option should he really be looking at? He is after good value for between £6,000 and £10,000 pretty much. I think his typical annual mileage will be about 10k a year or so. He isn't especially bothered about speed/performance.

I've tried to warn him that modern diesels can chuck up some quite nasty bills and to at least have a glance at the 2.0 standard petrol version, but is this even up-to-date advice any more? I'm pretty out of touch with things in the past 4 years if I'm honest!

Also, it doesn't matter how great value the skoda superb etc are, he seems dead set on a mondeo and won't even consider trying an insignia, never mind any others! :D he has only ever owned fords in his entire driving time.

All help very appreciated!

insignia is a pile of poo when compared to the mondeo,

try and get him to test a superb though, fantastic cars and often overlooked (this is from a mk4 mondeo owner)

spoilt for choice with the mondeo in terms of budget, you'll get a tidy facelift mk4.5 with more or less any engine you fancy at the topend or if you want to spend nearer to 6k a leggy mk4.5 or a decent prefacelift in your spec of choice.

i bought a 3yrs and 2 month old 2l tdci back in february in zetec trim for 5 grand.

granted it had 100k on the clock but it was clean bar a few stone chips and I've ragged it silly since (now north of 158k ) and the only problems I've had were user inflicted.

just bear in mind that even the petrol models can throw up some big bills if they go wrong (as can any modern car). but seriously have at least a look round a superb

Thanks for the input :D

Hah! I will try to get him to even look at the skoda superb but as I said above, my suspicion is that he wants a mondeo and isn't interested in literally anything else.

The ecoboost is a nice engine and shoudl be the less risky choice of the two. I'm not sure what you'll be able to buy with that engine for much under £10k though as it's still fairly new.

Even if he's convinced he doesn't want one, a drive or even sit in a Superb might force him to reconsider.

I was going to say that you can get a 240bhp 2.0 Ecoboost Titanium X Sport for 10k and that I quite fancy one, but then I realised it's probably actually the 200bhp one at that price range, then I realised it's probably not what the OP wants and that I'd generally be waffling on and not adding much useful input. :D

It'll only be a 240 if it was a facelift Titanium X Sport. All other models are 203PS. My Dad's been running a 240 for a while now and it's not given any problems.

Does he want an automatic? Doesn't have a choice with the 2.0 EcoBoost.

The PowerShift boxes need an expensive oil and filter change every 3 years - costs about £250. They're a wet clutch box and they hold a lot of expensive special transmission oil and I understand you need a WDS machine to change it, so more or less Ford dealers only. The Tit X Sport has 19" wheels with an odd tyre size too - you're looking at £800+ for a set of premium tyres.

If you're not bothered about performance, look at the 1.6 EcoBoost, or a 2.0 N/A petrol of which there are still a few around, and they tend to be cheap.
