Holiday location, drivable in a day or two?

And in terms of the air fare, it wasn't so much the price itself, as the constant attempts to gouge more (the original price basically being a lie, unless you wanted to travel without any luggage), and the generally miserable experience that is flying these days.

That's really a matter of airline unfortunately, the cheaper ones ruin the opinions of the majority, whilst the proper airlines (Singapore, Qatar, Virgin etc.) lead the pack in terms of "The flight is £1,000", and then actually only charging you £1,000.

Holidaying in Britain. You may as well urinate in a bucket for a week and when it's full just pour it over yourself whilst setting fire to the money you'd waste on some god awful hotel that gets 2 stars out of 5 on Trip Advisor (this is the highest in the UK). You'll save a lot of time for lounging because you can't do anything due to the constant wind and rain which will give you plenty of time to get into petty arguments with your wife and kids about whether fish and chips is better cuisine with or without mushy peas.

Britain really is a great travel destination said literally no one.

What..

The UK has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world? Some beaches in Cornwall can be stunning as well if the weather is right......(so you have point about the weather :p)

We're just back from two weeks in South West France, had a fantastic time. We flew and hired a car. Next year we are going to drive. Not so much for the cost savings as the savings are going to be modest. Its to allow us to stock up on all the lovely French food and wine. Mainly wine ;)

What a load of complete and utter tosh. I've read some rubbish in my time but this really takes the biscuit.

This is basically rubbish - there are fantastic places to visit in the UK and we have some outstanding areas of natural beauty as well as historic cities. I've been to lots of nice places and guess what - some of them were in the UK.

millions of holiday makers every year who come here say you are wrong but you don't actually live in the UK so likely don't have any idea what a fantastic country this has became since you left.

now please don't come back and spoil it you ****** ;)

Why are you all replying to him? He always posts nonsense and this isn't anything different.
Ignore him and he goes away ;)

get ferry to northern ireland, drive to donegal, admire epic lord of the rings/game of thrones esque scenery, go home satisfied.

or scotland, scotlands pretty cool too, lovely architecture in the cities, and more epic scenery in the hills, went over to the cairngorms once and it was very good, i must do it again sometime.

Donegal? Are you joking? What a boring **** hole.

Go to Dublin, or travel down to the proper countryside in Cork and Kerry.

suppose it depends on what you want, i'd call it peaceful. went to dublin, near got pickpocketed getting off the train and then mugged later on, not saying thats the norm but quite ruined my enthusiasm.

never been down to cork/kerry, but i'll maybe have a gander sometime.

Dublin is not as good as it used to be. Absolute ludicrous amounts of immigration in a tiny space of time is reshaping it in no short order! (Not to mention some of the indigenous, especially around areas like Ballymun are just as bad!)

Cork and Kerry is the most beautiful imo. If you do go down there, give me a shout and I'll relay over a few places which are worth a trip.

Apologies about harsh language regarding donegal, I just find the place dull as ditchwater. You've got the sights down the south west, but there is more going on, and the people are a lot friendlier. :)

Centre Parcs?

Accomodation prices vary massively over the year, plenty of things to do albeit some are pricey and the more specialist ones are worth pre-booking to ensure spots, but the grounds are wonderful (at least at Longleat) and it is great to wander around without being hassled by people selling stuff.

Well worth taking your own bikes if you can, as they do sting you for the hire ones, you can let kids and adults safely ride around as cars only normally come on campus first and last day (except the very rare staff vehicle and the "land-trains.")

we did normandy last year by car from lancashire. drove down to near folkestone on day one, overnight stay in premier inn, and then up and on to folkestone for the tunnel and driving to destination on the next day. probably 4-5 hours driving each day. could have done it all in a day but just didn't want to risk missing a channel tunnel deadline if we were unlucky to get stuck in traffic on the way.

came back in one day, something like 10 or 11 hours door to door.

we're considering driving lancashire to netherlands next year via hull to rotterdam ferry

I'm sure you're right. Thomson will not be getting my money again if I can help it. I've heard that Monarch, of the cheapo airlines, treat their customers less like marks than the rest.

Was at the Haven in Filey over the weekend just gone as a cheap getaway for one of the Mrs friends. Have to say with Haven being an absolute chavfest it actually wasn't that bad, weather was brilliant so we had a good time down at the beach, having BBQs and having a general laugh and a joke over beers! Well worth it imo and Filey is a really nice place!

It did, then we tore it up to make way for 60's housing estates and horrible supermarkets...

There are some stunning beaches in Cornwall I agree (walked most of the Cornish coast) but many are ruined by horrible holiday cottages and too many people.

The most stunning and unspoiled beaches are actually to the west of St. Ives a few hours walk along the coast. Difficult to get to and no buildings!

It certainly does help, very interesting info, cheers.

I think Spain is out - it's just too far. South of France I suspect is also a goner, but not as sure about that.

My estate does about 22mpg by the way. :D

I enjoy driving mind you, especially on the continent. I've done 3000+ mile road trips across Europe before and enjoyed every minute (except the motorways around Paris - shudder). But I think a kid in the back changes things a lot!

Nah, the kids will get used to it! This comes from one kid that was regularly driven thousands of miles to Southern France/Italy/Spain in the summer.:p

On the other hand a slightly shorter journey could be the Loire Valley? Lots of lakes and Chateaus to visit.

The Isle of Skye is a beautiful and relaxing place to spend some time. If you're feeling flush you should stay and eat at The Three Chimneys - it's a simply brilliant place, very intimate but not intimidating and the food is divine, the service faultless.

The Lake District offers some stupendous scenery and relaxing (or invigorating, depending on your wishes) walks. Take waterproofs though.

I would watch this film

I have just returned from a weeks holiday in St Ives, I love that part of the county and we always return to the same place every year. We stayed in a tent at Polmanter touring park.

http://polmanter.co.uk/

we have booked for two weeks next year. It all really depends on the weather though if you have some good weather you have a good holiday at least thats my view of it. Over the last few years we have been going there we have only had 1 really bad year the rest have been fantastic holidays.
Britain really is a great travel destination said literally no one.
Depends on if your holiday involves sitting around a pool getting ****ed or going out and doing stuff.

I've travelled around the UK a lot but there's still plenty I haven't seen - don't forget what a great and powerful country we once were. There's lots of history in the UK, lots of beautiful architecture and scenery, there's whisky distilleries and all sorts of stuff.

Have you never seen tourists in the UK, here for the sights?

That said, I wouldn't drive any further than south of france or somewhere. Driving for 16 hours each way isn't my idea of a holiday.
