Hi,
I can get a used z87 gene for significantly cheaper than the z97.
Would I notice much of a difference?
I don't really care about the M.2 Support but I was wondering if theres anything else I'm missing.
Thanks.

You would need to check it is flashed to latest BIOS to support the Haswell refresh CPU's in the case of the Gene VI Z87

Oh yeah... Should the board be shipped with an older version of the bios (more likely I presume) I would have to use a haswell chip to update the bios so that it can be used with a devils canyon chip. Is that right?

You would yes, latest asus bios versions that support devils canyon are 1504 beta and 1505. If you do opt for the Z97 model, this will allow you to move to a broadwell cpu later. It's strongly suspected that the devils canyon cpu's will be the last chips compatible with Z87 boards.

As I don't see myself purchasing broadwell I think I will get the z87 gene. I will try and purchase a used celeron g1820 and use it solely to the update and sell it on again. Does this sound reasonable or am i mad? Thanks for the responses.
