As in the title, I've got a new S4 Mini for dear old mum, but I can't seem to register on any mobile phone networks.

When I put *#06# into the phone, it shows up as IMEI 0 / 01. I've checked the IMEI number on the sticker at the back on imei.info and it seems to be the correct phone and model.

I've done a factory reset but I'm still unable to get any mobile network coverage.

Any suggestions or should I just send it back for a replacement?

Edit: Not sure if it's ok to mention the competitor like that, change it to the rainforest shop otherwise. :)

A bit more detective work shows it's a fake of some description, either stolen or counterfeit.

Looking at the seal sticker on the unit taken from a random legit auction posting:

Now look at the sticker on the box I received:

Different typography, spacing and there's a colon in the second section. Also noticed my box doesn't have the blurb about soy stuff written on the side.

Sending it back now. :)

Hey, having no IMEI on the phone can mean one of two things. Either it is a fake device, or it has lost its IMEI and needs rebuilt. Have a look http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/servicelocation/ to find a service centre close. They can do it for free if the phone is European, unfortunately not if it is outside of Europe.

You may want to call Samsung support on 0330 726 7864 and request someone do an IMEI check for you. They use different systems to determine the validity of a device.

Hope this helps.

As the OP says it's a new device, there's no way I'd ever bother with doing all this!

Straight back to the shop, new one please!

Ah thanks! I'll give them a call first just to rule out any obvious problems.

It's within 14 days of purchase so I can just send it back and get a refund rather than worrying about repair. I'll buy it through GiffGaff I think, less likely to get another fake.

Did you purchase it directly through Amazon, or through a third-party on their site?
