Windows 7 mainstream support ends in January 2015, but it's not time to freak out yet

To be fair you get pretty good value for a Microsoft OS when you consider how long it lasts(with updates and support) when you consider how much you pay for a typical new game or piece of software not to mention hardware.

Having free alternatives is just icing on the cake and another plus point.

I have to agree £99 for an OS that will last 7 years on average isnt bad really that's just £1.30 a month.

Makes my £15 and £25 for Win8 on two PCs excellent value, especially when they have had a free upgrade to Win8.1 with good long term support.

As to £1.30 month, I know some people that pay more then that just for an AV but refuse to upgrade their OS for ages(ie some XP users I know ;) .)

My Win7 Pro was free :p

By free I mean I bought 3 copies for £45 each on release and sold 2 at profit and recouped the cost of the 3rd then made it my own copy :D

Best free OS ever. Still the same install since August 2009.

Actually best free OS is Linux, reason being plenty of Linux distros to choose from, better security then Windows and in most cases better looking GUI,I could throw in Linux has a more complete software install package then Windows as well,no real need for AV either on Linux http://www.howtogeek.com/135392/htg-explains-why-you-dont-need-an-antivirus-on-linux-and-when-you-do/ .

Those are some reasons why I use Linux,Win8.1 I won't bore you with why ;) .

this WILL come back one day and bit the linux community in the ass.

Not really because of the way Linux works, however there are free Linux AVs if you really want one, they can help you stop spreading Windows viruses to Windows users from your Linux OS ;) .

i hope it gets extended, windows 7 is my favourite operating system so far! hopefully 9 will be good

They are all good,Windows has not been terrible really since WinME days IMHO,however you can bet there will be some that hate Win9,10,11,12 etc some people don't like change or get stuck in the past or find a reason to hate a new OS when it arrives regardless.

+1 People just dont like change.

There's likely some of that. But then 7 was received well and whilst personally I liked Vista, I empathized with people having driver and increased hardware requirement woes. But to counter that I know many, myself included who actually enjoy a fresh new change in OS, if its a genuinely good and positive one. The debate on how much 8 delivers towards that is a genuine one surely.

Whether you like 8 or not, I don't think its fair to be little by generalization the end users negative sentiments towards it by categorizing it as simply people not liking change. There's validity in some of the criticisms.

I recently bit the bullet and moved over to windows 8.1 and i have to say the default interface is just awful but thankfully i found a free program called "Classic Shell" that solved the main issue that had stopped me making the switch. Can't say I've noticed any better performance over Win 7 though...

I had trouble letting go of XP for Vista but had no qualms jumping away from Vista to Win7 though ... but then again did anyone?

I was sad to go from my favourite DOS 6.22 to Windows for good,as to Vista to Win7 well I was a little disappointed with Win7,mainly because I did have Vista SP2 running great and Win7 did not really offer me any major improvements ie little bit of speed and that was it for me.

I still miss my old DOS 6.22 now and then, nearest I get to it nowadays is with DOSBox installed on Win8.1.

The AV vendors will be lining up to sell their snake oil to naive Linux desktop users, if it ever takes off. They'll probably copy their Android strategy.

Linux users are pretty savvy and in general Linux software is free so they will have a hard time trying to justify and getting a Linux user to pay for any Linux software.

I didn't mind Vista once it got service packed.

Before hand it had some utterly show-stopping bugs.

Never really had any problems with vista

Didn't like ME but since then pretty good except win 8 which I'm just skipping

Biggest one for me was watching RDC throw a crappy with large files and crash explorer. That was stupid and should have been caught in beta.

Then it also hated installing on certain unformatted SSDs. I had to get my Windows XP disk to format my X25-M in order to then get Vista setup to play happy with it.

That was all fixed with SP1 iinm but shouldn't have gotten through in the first place.
