Today I did what I shouldn't do... Compare headphones from different stations.

My 650 are my main phones, but for the last couple of days I've done some deep comparisons with my AKG 702 65th Annie's.

My Annie's beat them in area I can think of it was literally outclassing my 650 in all aspects.

Here's a tip..Don't compare you equipment if they have different uses! :D

Haha I'm thinking of selling them and going for the K712. The 65th Annie's have a too similar sound to the HD 650 but does it all better. Might try the HD600 again if I can find a trade but from memory they didn't sound as good as the 650. The 712 pro is reall appealing!

The bass is tight and present. Coming from the X1 the first thing you will notice is the bass isn't as flabby. They 65th have a strange ability to be intimate but have a large soundstage at the same time. Go for it before they shoot up in price as they have been discontinued.

The Annie spanks the 702 pretty badly. The 702 is airier though but it's a lot thinner. The 65th has a smoother presentation with none of the peaks the others suffer from. Full bodied bass and much more musical.

I like the 702 though it's airy presentation is unmatched.

Yeah but I still like them. I usually hate a thin cold sound but AKG do it right with their 702s. When I use them for gaming or OSTs they give that sense of airy and lightness that can sound magical. The Q701 sorted out most of the 702s issues without losing all the the airy presentation :)

No lack of bass with mine and the only difference between the 702 and the 702.65 is the ear pads which can be had for £70.

£70 for ear pads? What are they made of?

How do all of these compare to the Q701? and would these ear pads be worth buying for the Q701 for gaming only?

I should be able to do a Q701 vs HD600 comparison soon

I've tried all ear pads on my AKGs and the Annie was the only one that actually kept that intimacy and warmth.

Annie pads on the Q701= Thicker, warmer but not Annie thick I would say it's 75% of the Annie. The Annie has very seductive vocals.

Annie pads on the K702 and K701 didn't sound right at all. I noticed some distortion and they sound was just odd.

Something else is going on for sure. The Annie I have is the original batch, the newer has the pads from the K712 so not sure how they will sound now.

You must have had some magic pixie dust sprinkled on yours then because after trawling the '65 thread on head-fi for people who've swapped pads, they thought it was more like 99% of the annie. :D

I rarely agree with headfi. There's a lot of good guys on there that I really trust for opinions but for the most part there's just a lot of parroted information.

It's best to hear them yourself because if I didn't try them I would have missed out :(

Even the above review says it's basically a review of 2 pads.

That must meen it is?! Come on man use your own ears :) I've got the K702 Q701 65th in front of me and all have had each others pads on. I've spent a lot of my time comparing the AKGs because I wanted to hear for myself if it's true. Also guess what the Annie sounds like with 701 pads? Terrible!! ;)

The 712 is next!

Well that's just your review against many others who say the only difference is the pads. I'm just going with the majority.

Looking at them it's hard to see where else the difference would be, didn't someone show the insides and they're near enough identical?

I was all for going for the 65th but after having a look it seems a bit of a rip off.

There's quite a few guys on there that also think there's more to it. Mad Lust Envy is one and while I don't always share his opinion, agree with him on the 65th. An example look at the Denon D600..reviews trashed them but there's a lot of us who can't for the life of us see what's bad about them. If you don't trust your own ears you will miss out on some truly amazing gear.

I've had the pleasure of listening to the HD800 for many hours and I think the 65th is a much nicer listen and only a shade below for technical ability. These hold their own at the 1k price limited and if you want to let a few people put you off..then you are going to miss out on a headphone that sounds gorgeous, intimate, engaging, good stage.

Trust in your ears.

Yes but most of us can't afford to just keep buying headphones, so we're forced to rely on other people's reviews and hope they are honest and not just this month's fave.
