Can't believe it my loved Sennheiser HD650 has been dethroned!

Comparison between Q701 (Quincey Jones edition) and K702? They look similar and are priced somewhat similarly at times?

Have my Q701 coming soon, I currently use the X1

I'm not looking for them to replace the X1, rather, expecting them to excel in different ways.

702 is a little airier and thinner. Both have the same sense of space although with the 702 I get the feeling that the soundstage lacks definition compared to the Q.

Q is slightly warm, slightly fuller with a more neutral bass(702 is below neutral)
Both have the same positional accuracy. The Q improves most of the issues the 701/702 had.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to listening to them a bit more now. :)

Are they cans which have any benefit from a "burn in" period? (if you believe there is such a thing)

There seems to be this magical myth that AKGs need hundreds of hours burn in..Never noticed it really. I've noticed out of the box that they can sound a tad edgy but this seems to disappear within a day or so. I believe that drivers need time to settle and pads need time to wear but honestly I've found the differences so slight.

There's quite a few guys on there that also think there's more to it. Mad Lust Envy is one and while I don't always share his opinion, agree with him on the 65th.

From the Mad Lust Envy review...

The pads are the second most significant change from the older models. They are made of memory foam inside velour. Very dense and molds to your head shape MUCH more than the older model pads. This causes a better seal, which is more than likely the main reason why the sound signature is warmer, and more bassy (though no consensus or proof that it either is or isn't what causes all the sonic difference between the older models). Other than those two main differences, the Annie is physically a rebadged K702.

To me that reads that he does think that the pads are what cause the difference in sound but there is no measured proof to back it up.

He's also said that after test the Annie still had some extra warmth with the different pads on the Annie thread. My 702 with Annie's pads sounds weird! I do think the pads pay a big part as with any headphone but maybe internal damping? The Annie just has this extra thickness and I've heard people try to find what causes it but no one knows for sure.

I've not gone in there yet to look of it has. I've got a pair of K712 on hold, has to sale my Q701 and 650 to get the funds. Hoping they will be my main gaming phones.

I was considering getting the memory foam (or gel as they call it) pads but after you said they sounded pants on the K702 I think I'll give it a miss. Since opening the bass port, I do have a lot more lower end now anyway, so I'm probably going to leave them as they are as they do sound really sweet now.

Since yours are modded the pads might have a positive effect but if you are happy with your 702s now then I would say don't worry. The memory foam pads do lose on on some air and the soundstage is less to my ears so adding the pads will definetly effect that.

I'm a bit worried that if I push any more bass into them I'll lose the whole AKG sound and I really don't want to do that. I rarely use my DT990 pros any more, these cover all types of music really well so I'm a bit stumped as to what to get next. I was thinking about saving my pennies for the HD650 but when you said the Annies were better in all areas that kind of put an end to that. I don't think my conscience will allow me to get the Annies when I'm still in the "it's just the pads" school. :D

Haha A lot of people are put off by the Annie. If you ever get to hear them I'm sure you will change your mind ;) I really thought the 650 would stop me wanting anymore phones but when I compared the Annie they really make me want to listen to them all the time!

Can't really think of anything better than the modded 702(apart from the Annie) without going into the T1, LCD2 sort of league and even then AKG have that airy sound that makes the music sound spread out and like it's part of the room not just two speakers next to your ears playing sounds. I think the older Denon Line would go well with the 702.
