Hi, Let me begin with my situation i saw an MSI 290X Gaming edition on the bay for £300 which was cheap i offered £275 and got it, it was advertised as new but i wasn't massively concerned for that price as i thought i could RMA it.
Well it's a great card FPS wise but for me it runs to hot, it hits 91c on stock settings! and yes i know these run warmer than most cards but i usualy run 2 monitors and its that temp on 1 monitor!
Anyway i contacted MSI by email they replied apologizing i had this problem but that i had to go through the retailer!
Now i don't understand this as surely they send them to MSi anyway and i have the serial number it was built in December 2013 so has like 2 1/2 years warranty.
So what if you got it as a gift or lost the receipt how do you get it fixed or my situation?
I know i could probably get a refund through the seller its just it was cheap.
Any advice would be grateful before i have to ask for a refund :(
Thanks

I think you'll struggle getting a refund Borley if the only reason is that it runs @91c tbh bud.

I'd imagine a counter argument in which he'll state that AMD claim the cards are designed to run at high temps and thus there is no problem :(

I feel your pain though.

They won't take a return because its not broken in any way. They hot cards and are designed to take it. Also does the fact you're running two monitors up the heat a bit as it won't clock down to idle clocks fully? That was an issue with my 7970 but that may be fixed now. Matt or one of other lads will know better as I don't have AMD cards anymore

"Why Can't You RMA straight to MSI?"

Because "you" don't have warranty for the card. The warranty is only with the original owner and it is non-transferable. Also if I'm not mistaken, 1st year warranty will always be retailer's responsibility. Usually it's up to the retailer to sort out the issue with the customer, and it is only in the circumstance of the retailer being unable to provide a satisfactory option/outcome manufacturer may step in to help.

Also as mention above, it's not really "broken", until the heat actually killed your card or start to display errors...

One or a couple of top exhaust fans blowing out of your case plus the back exhaust fan will help greatly with temps unless you have already got your case setup that way and still get high temps.

Make sure there is plenty of space between the card and any other pci-e device in your case.

and also don't use the 14.6 or 14.7 drivers as they heat up the card by 5-6c more than previous drivers. Use 14.4 Whql.

Ok thanks for your replies, i do have 2 monitors as 1 reply said but my point is i only use 1 aas its already hitting 91c
Thanks anyway

I guess the loophole is if he stated it comes with warranty, send it back under the pretence of it being false because it isn't actually transferred so the warrenty is actually false. Unless he rmas it for you

Try taking the cooler off and re-applying some thermal paste yourself ? Might bring temps down a bit there was a thread about hot temps with same card as you last week and I think that solved his issue :)

Same sort of oroblem here,i bought a 290x off a private seller and dont have the invoice, the seller is trying to find it for me but if its lost i may just have to accept its £300 down the pan. I dont think i will be buying private again i saved £70 but may have lost £300

I've RMAd direct to MSI three times now. They don't specifically advertise it but if you're unhappy with a return procedure or BS rule by a retailer then they will do it.

FTR I never, ever buy second hand GPUs. You don't know where they've been, how they've been treated and usually you get no warranty. The two year law in the UK only applies to the buyer who bought it new from a reputable source.

I'm not impressed with MSI at all on their RMA performance as my 290 Gaming will have been RMA'd for 28 days come Monday so I'll be going for a refund. In another thread here someone sent their 280x back under RMA and got a new one within a few weeks and they actually sent theirs back after I sent mine back..

If you look from the side of the card, can you tell if the cooler has properly seated onto the GPU?

It might even worth get the screwdriver to see if the screws are loose that may be you can tighten it (BUT be careful not to over-tighten it!). If that doesn't help, then try removing the cooler and clean-off the old thermal paste, and apply new paste, refit the cooler and see if it should the temp out. If that still doesn't work, provided that the card's is with a reference PCB, you could may be try to buy a 3rd party cooler for the 290x instead. Something like a Gelid Icy Vision Rev.2 plus the 290/290x vrm enhancement kit would only cost around under £40 delivered.

Law states they don't even have to deal directly with you. Well, not in the UK any way. I've only done it because I wasn't happy with the tacked on terms and conditions that certain retailers tried to force on me (the restocking/testing fees for example).

Hi Alex could you send me a link that you went through to MSI?
Thanks

Try re-applying TIM? I doubt MSI will take it back for the heat reason as others have said. Even though there is a warranty void sticker, MSI are known to be quite lenient with the warranties as far as removing the cooler is concerned

Hate to say this, but his example isn't going to help your case, as he actually bought the card from a retailer and was able provide prove on it (i.e. invoice from the retailer with his name and address on it), whereas you bought your card from a private seller...

I feel you but over the years I have bought and sold many cards and never had any problems. Now I stick to the members market and as a rule anything over 3 months I would rather buy new

Yeah they absolutely insisted I send them proof of purchase.

One case was with OCUK (a reboxed 6970 Lightning) the other was with two other retailers. But yeah, all three times I had to send proof of purchase.

Hi mate, I noticed you mentioned this on another thread and as I was running 14.6 thought I'd try 14.4 as you suggested, made no difference. Not worried about my temps though as its warm weather here and my temps are up about 9c from winter temps which seems ok. Might suggest its not the drivers though as it made no difference on my setup. Feel for you Borley, I don't buy from ebay, no matter how cheap. :(
