life is hard at times, it could be money issues, love life or even death.

2 weeks ago after searching for a job for 18months i landed a position as
a general assistant in a nursing home.

i've met some wonderful old people with amazing stories.
some of the old people can't tell me anything as they are vacant shells of their
former self, bed ridden unable to eat, go the loo etc.

i've had depression for most of my adult life but this last 2 weeks has been an eye opener.

alls i can say is if you have a bucket list start on it straight away ;)

Screw the bucket list. Live in the moment and be impulsive. Always remember, the sun shines in the bedroom when we play, the rain it always starts, when you go away.

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got;
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?

All those night when you've got no lights,
The check is in the mail;
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by it's tail;
And your third fiance didn't show;

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead;
The morning's looking bright;
And your shrink ran off to Europe,
And didn't even write;
And your husband wants to be a girl;

Be glad there's one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.

Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came.

Blinking hard week for me, but it's okay because I've now managed to have a sit down, annnd now I think me has a femoral hernia. Poops!

Care homes are an eye opener! my wifes a care assistant and i wouldn't wish that job on anyone. I also did a stint as a cook for one in my youth.
There was a guy who was 110, he must have spent 1/4 of his life in a home unable to look after himself with little family irc the priest came to see him once in a while but no family. Another resident was in there late 60's with full on alzheimer's (something i wouldn't wish on anyone!) they lived in world of there own, didn't even recognise there own children.

One thing i leant is a long healthy life is not all is cracked up to be and don't take life for granted!

oh and old people can be worse than children, screw the sweet OAP image :p , they can be downright childish, spiteful and ignorant

Would have to agree...my dad is in the position at the moment where he could lose his sight at any moment (and is lucky to be here at all after the heart attack he suffered years ago). Live life to its fullest I say.

Ive had a bad month losing people that i cared for and i suppose it will only get worse the longer i go on but coming home to my young uns keeps me going, that and beer.

I could never work in a care home, would be so depressing.

I'd take a barbiturate overdose well before I got demented.

given the state of the ops mind im quite puzzled as to why hed go to such a depressive place to work. its a bit weird. :confused:

they are despressing places. if you have a histroy of depression why would you go into the very places you arnt really suited to.

Beautiful thread with much inspiration.

Very thankful to be taking part in a study abroad programme this August in the states for 1 year. Will help me see life for what it truly is and appreciate it.

Won't lie some of that kind of stuff scares me a bit.

Used to know someone who up until he was 95 was bright as a bell - continued working as a solicitor of some kind - was so sharp he put the fear of god into opposing legal practitioners and even more so when they found out he was in his 90s. Then one day he just sort of turned off - lived on another 10 years or so a mere shell of the person he used to be - barely knowing his own name.

Cheers for that ;)

Yep, enjoy life whilst you can. My grandad worked hard all his life and did go on some great holidays but died a couple of years into his retirement which he was looking forward to - going on long holidays with my grandma

Me personally, I'll be starting a new job (same company) in 2 weeks, 2 weeks after in Ibiza with some great friends then 3 weeks later with family in Portugal for 2 weeks.

May as well enjoy life whilst im fit and healthy, and still here
