FIFA World Cup 2014 - Final & 3rd Place Play-off [12th - 13th July] **spoilers**

Cough, bit of an attacking intent from the wing, the extra attacking and goal. Janmat has done more attacking in 20 mins or whatever than Kuyt did all game(maybe tournament).

I think people think a winger playing as wing back means he's supposed to only defend. Fullbacks in a 4-*-* get forwards loads. When you play three CB's and push the fullbacks forward they are supposed to attack MORE than a fullback, not less.

If they had people willing to run that much on both wings, who actually got forward and didn't ruin every attack they'd be in the final easily.

wingbacks dont have any protection from wingers though, so they have to temper when they go forward and when they hang back. Janmaat bombing on against a tired team when 2-0 up is v different from playing from the outset against a fresh team at 0-0.

JESUS CHRIST we get it, alright? You hate Kuyt, we understand this, I must have read at least 3000 posts where you've ****ged him off, just give it a rest!

That is what the extra CB is for. THey are there to defend, but they are also two big parts of the attack. Blind bombed forward against Spain and it was the difference between Robben/RVP having service and not having service. There is no point not attacking, but also remember that Kuyt, regardless of what defensive duties he had, had LOADS of the ball in and around the final third. It's got nothing at all to do with his defensive duties. People are using the fact that he's being asked to defend more than usual.... as a reason that his crossing has been worse than anyone else in the tournament, that when he has the choice of trying a throughball... he usually passes towards the centre circle instead. If he actually never got over the half way line... some of the excuses being made in this thread would be relevant.

When he's on the edge of the box he's not in an unfamiliar position, nor is he defending. His woeful crossing is nothing to do with what position he's playing. His choice to kill every counter attack with either a pass backwards or a crap cross is because he's ****, not because he's a wingback or has defensive duties.

Yes, Janmat was a sub and had more energy, but Kuyt bombed forward all game long...... it's what he did with the ball that is the problem, not where he went. Against Argentina he probably had more touches than Sneijder, RVP or Robben in the final third... and the reason no one ahead of him had almost any touches was his woeful play from that point.

LVG trusts Kuyt's ability to play the balance that is required from wingbacks better than Janmaat; because Janmaat had more end product does not mean that he is equally trustworthy as a defender.

More to the point, Kuyt hasn't made many defensive errors, which has got to be comforting to a manager.

Kuyt had a solid game but it's sad to see a proper professional bow out of International football. Most players would've rolled around on the floor after having their head cracked open. He got up, jogged off and had is head stapled shut before jogging back on and continuing as if nothing happened

all a bit meaningless really but at least LvG is heading to Manchester now (via a few days in the Netherlands for media duties etc)

His international record is great, but that stat is completely meaningless as he could have drawn 30 of those games against much weaker opposition.

Can't see anything beyond a Germany win tonight which is unfortunate as I've had a bet from the start of Argentina to win followed up with Argentina win, Germany second :(

I think Germany will win but I don't mind either way.

The result against Brazil has skewed perceptions of Germany a bit, they're very good but they have mistakes in them and could well bottle it.

Messi might put on a masterclass and win it for Argentina...
