suspected child abuse

Note that the NSPCC and the police have the power to commence legal action so you would have to be careful what your start rolling that they would be duty bound to follow up. The NSPCC is not just a charity they actually have power to start an investigation.

^ Child and Youth Protection Services will deal with your concerns confidentially and professionally. Charities are powerless, CYPS have legal support, authority and powers.

It would appear they're not quite that powerless.

For balance: a work colleague's brother and his wife were reported, by neighbours, to social services for neglect (or something), because their 4 children (age approx 9, 5, 4, 18 months!) were being allowed to spend all their time wandering the streets of the small estate they lived on, often without shoes and, apparently, sometimes knocking on doors for food. A visit from SS ensued, advice and support was given, no harm done.

They were lucky nothing worse happened, was a couple of horrific incidents with young kids who were just left to roam the streets here hit by cars.

OP you have a responsibility.

A responsibility to the child if you know child abuse is happening.

AND

A responsibility to whoever is going to be accused. Reporting will set into motion an unstoppable chain of events, and could ruin someones life.

Well that's a bit dramatic, to be honest. Once upon a time, everyone used to wander the streets as kids. Somehow enough of them survived to create future generations. Who then didn't let their children out of the house for fear of death by automobile.

i think if people report people your name should be known as the reporter.

the devistation it can cause people from mean vindictive people who are nosey or just think something may be wrong should be thought of. thats why names should be known or reporties.

This would lead to the reporter getting battered aswell as the kids though.

waits for "snitches get stitches" follow up....

no, no silly reply.

if people cant see what destruction of reporting on the off chance something maybe wrong then sorry they should deal with any repecusions from it.

im all for children being looked after but people should mind own business unless they have obvious proof that children are being harmed or in danger.

so as said the reporting persons name should be known.

A little dramatic and I was out and roaming around the age of 8, but some around here just turf their kids out with no common sense and way too young. Which hasn't had happy endings here - one was knocked down and killed which also destroyed her parent's lives* and the driver and passenger and in a separate incident another 4 year old was run down with both legs broken and other fairly serious injuries but survived.

* Father later tried to kill the driver even though it wasn't the driver's fault - the driver later dying of a heart attack brought on by the father trying to burn him to death in his own house.

frivolous or malicious reports however are dealt with under wasting police time and other things.

saying "HEY EVERYONE THIS GUY HERE REPORTED A CRIME!!!!"

Is pretty much gonna end all reporting of crime that isn't specifically happening to that person.

They may well be dealt with like that after the allegation has been investigated but that is too late for someone who has been mistakenly or falsely accused.
