Ford Mondeo - Sub £2k

The 1.8 engine is fine, no need to discount it over the 2.0. Concentrate on the trim level though. LX is crap. You should easily get a facelift (04 onwards) model for your budget though.

whist we are on the topic of mondeos, Howard you have one, so you may be able to help, I've been looking at focus (2008 on) in a 1.8/2 litre petrol but this thread made me look at mondeos again (2007 on) (I don't need the size of a mondeo) got a budge of £4K - 4.2K the the figures for the mondeo don't seem to be as economical as the focus? ,
i.e. the focus 2.0 does 9.2 seconds to 60, with an mpg figure of 39, tax at £205, the equivalent mondeo is 9.6 seconds to 60, with an mpg of 35 and tax being £220 ??

I don't know if they use the same engine but the Mondeo is a heavier car.

What is it that's crap about the LX? What's the difference between the LX and a Zetec, or Ghia?

based on a focus..

LX and studio is bottom trim levels, steel wheels, no air con, no alarm system etc

Zetec has aircon, alloys, body colour spoiler, heated windscreen, alarm etc
Ghia, just adds a couple of differences, like walnut dash and different alloys and global window closing

The best bit about the Mondeo is its high sales as a new car, which means it’s widely, and cheaply, available on the used market. And, on top of that, you can get everything you need on even the base version, so there’s no point looking beyond the 1.8 LX, with its good performance and low running costs.

In common with all Mondeos, it has good levels of safety and security equipment, plus goodies such as a CD player, remote central locking and air-con. Stepping up through the trims brings things such as CD multichangers, alloy wheels and leather upholstery.

So, by the looks of it, LX comes with aircon? I'm not fussed about having steel or alloy wheels at this price-point. Though heated windscreen would be very useful, and alarm. I'm tempted to go check out this one, but I'll keep my eyes open for a Zetec.

As others have already suggested, disregard the LX and stick with the Zetec & Ghia models. Personally though I would go for the Zetec as it's aimed to be a bit sporty. Even though I've never owned a Mondeo but I have owned a few Focus's, this is the way that I see it and this is how it is for them so it may still differ for the Mondeo:

LX - sometimes you get air con or a heated screen or even both, standard comfortable suspension setup, front electric windows, steel wheels or sometimes the entry level based alloys, usually you get remote central locking as standard, no fog lights, standard interior.

Zetec - ABS, air con, remote central locking, more appealing alloys & interior, front electric windows, front fog lights all as standard, heated front screen is usually standard too, upgraded suspension that adds a sport feel (usually just stiffer springs) as standard. I believe Traction Control was an optional extra too.

Ghia - ABS, air con, remote central locking, the premium-ish Ghia interior & exterior with the fake wood trim (looks awful though!), front fog lights, heated front screen, traction control, Ghia alloys, Ghia comfort suspension, electric windows all around usually - all as standard. I'm led to believe that the 6 CD player, ESP & cruise control was an optional extra as well.

If I have missed anything out or if I am incorrect in places then I do apologize, but that is just a rough guideline :) In my opinion though, I would just stick to the Zetec as it's the best of both worlds.
