H110 vs ye olde NH-D14

I've had the D14 a while now across a couple of CPU's and it always seems to have done the job. However I recently upgraded to a case that will take a 280mm rad, the case being NZXT H440.

I will be upgrading to X99 soon and wondered if I would gain anything buy moving to a closed water cooler instead, the best looks to be the H110 give or take. Worth it?

The temps will only be slightly better and perhaps more noise from the stock corsair fans. You will gain a bit more space and not have to worry about clearance issues with the H110.

Personally I'd stick with what you already have. When you upgrade your motherboard/CPU etc I'd see how it copes and if it's not every well (which I doubt) then think about upgrading the cooling. There's no point spending money on something you probably won't need.

I'll Stick with the D14 then, Just need to get more cool air on my CF 290x which is my next problem, they create far to much heat and 6 fans on the top and front of my H440 just don’t reach them enough to cool them down. The ideal solution would be to have a side fan blowing on them but this isn’t possible with my case.

Unfortunately air intake is a big problem on the H440 case. Are your cards reference or non reference cooled models?

They are non reference which would be a good thing, if they're weren’t crossfired and sat in my case.

I had a similar issue with windforce 670's in a bitfenix shinobi xl. Another case with poor air intake. One ghetto mod I used was to remove all the pci brackets and place a 140mm fan set to exhaust on the rear external of the case. Fan was set just below the dvi connector on the top card, this allowed it to extract some of the hot air trapped between the graphics cards.

How did you get the fan to stay?

Small putty type adhesive pads from a local grocery shop. Though I think you can get magnetic fan mounts now.

Im not knocking air but you do know there are just as many hazards with big air coolers?

things shorting out on the metal fan clips

Big weight hanging off of your mobo

Fan blades breaking and flying off, also you could have the whole fan fall off onto your big expensive GFX card damaging it or the PCI-e Slot

air is not infallible

aio are crap

leaks galore,then they packup constantly

no trouble with air,fans only break off if you stick your finger in them :eek:

and the backplate supports the weight of the heatsink

Get a refurb H100 for cheap and use the Noctua fans to pull air through the rad and out the top. Job done and nicely quiet, too!!

Plus the stock H100 fans can be added in if you really need them, or used elsewhere in your case to further improve airflow.

Todays big dual tower coolers aren't even that heavy anyway. Using a k2 here, 1500g. Thermalright once released a full copper version of the famous ultra extreme 120. A single tower cooler that weighed in at 1900g without fans.

Agree, the Noctua fans will drop the temps and will also be quieter.

Get Corsair Link and create a custom profile for yourself. I have the h100i myself and have no complaints. It is and it isn't noisy, it will depend on what type of profile you want to set for yourself.

And what you're blowing the air through - Mesh, grille, gauze, open, etc... IMO, that's where a lot of the noise comes from.

Agree with this comment 100%, test a fan out in the open and it's perfectly quiet, stick it in your case, with a mesh in front of it, that's got a filter on it and it's a whole different ball game

Top air cools as good or better, is quieter, has less problems, is cheaper and the pump can never fail or leak. Cryorig R1 Ultimate, NH-D15 & PH-TC14PE all run 2.4c cooler than H100i and are 1/7th-1/8th as noisy. Slow down the H100i fans to at similar volume and air coolers run 7-9c cooler. H110 is only slightly quieter and performs about the same as H100i.

Keep your NH-D14 and put some better fans on it .. like a couple of TY-143 fans. They are no louder at full speed than H110 or H100i and will increase your NH-D14 cooling by about 8c .. assuming your case is cooling good.
