Who has bought a grey import phone/tablet? Are you worried about the warranty?

Hi everyone

I've just received a Samsung Note Pro 12.2 and as I suspected it might be (given the price), I would say it's a grey import.

The box was sealed with Samsung stickers on it (could be spoofed), and inside it has what looks like a genuine Samsung style UK plug.

However when I've switched it on, it starts in Chinese and is set to Hong Kong time and the back of the box states "For more information visit samsung.com/hk

What I'm worried about is the warranty? Will Samsung honour it or is it just an expensive brick if it goes wrong?

I've looked into Squaretrade and they have said they supply a 3 year warranty including accidental damage repairs for less than the cost of a standard UK tablet on it's own, so that's an option I suppose.

Not sure whether to take the risk or not...:/

It really depends on what youre planning to use it on. We are both in the same boat with our tablets but i dont really think ill be using mine outside the house. Maybe if youre planning on using it lots at work it might be worth giving samsung uk a call and see if they can help you out? Unlike you i knew mine was an import so maybe if you told them about how you had no idea they might give you a hand.

Cheers for the reply.

I thought I'd make a new thread as the question would probably be lost in the 12" thread.

Yeah, I've been trying to find a definitive answer online but don't seem to be able to find anything concrete without actually calling them.

Ooh, I had a look at the site you said about...that does look dodgy, glad yours went through OK! :D

Talking about imports, is it relatively safe to order things that you know will be shipped from Europe but the company is UK based (or has UK office)? I want to get an LG G2 but they only do 32GB version with international model.

I've just ordered a Surface Pro 3 also a grey import.

Are people bringing them in suitcases?

Once MS start selling it in the UK I will have warranty coverage.

I bought a Dell Venue Pro 8 in USA, After developing a fault I tried to get the warranty transferred to UK but dell said their international warranty doesn't cover mobiles and tablets so watch out for them. I did manage to kick up a fuss and get a replacement but it was a big effort.

I bought a couple of Samsung 7.7 tabs as greys, the saving was substantial so I took the risk and paid for a warrenty, tenner per tab, I have no problem buying a reliable product via the grey route especially if the supplier has good reviews.

Samsung (and bizarrely, Nokia back in the day) are pretty good about this from my experience of greys/pre-launch (back in the days when I didn't have to give them back) the only stumbling block is radio devices that have that 1 time lock system (eg note 3s) which are a bit trickier i understand although if you plead to the right person you could probably get this done by saying you were tricked.

I bought a Xiaomi Mi2S from www.fulcrumall.com. It was good value and there is ostensibly a warranty but I'm told getting a positive response from them if you have problems is not the easiest thing in the world.
