Hello folks, going to Prague for a long weekend in October with the 'lads'. I'm pretty stumped which area to stay in? Obviously we're wanting a good night life but we're also a cultured bunch :p so would like to be near places to visit during the day.

Currently looking near Wenceslas Square but don't want to spend our time at bars/clubs with other British tourists and paying London prices

Any recommendations would be welcome.

Last year on the official trip to the UEFA Super Cup we stayed one night in the Boutique Hotel Jalta:

It's on Wenceslas Square, Václavské náměstí 818/45. Close to trams, metro and the old town is also close by. Comfortable and has a good buffet breakfast. I would expect the rates in October to be very good. Worth checking.

"Welcome hostel Prague centre" for accommodation, though not if you want somewhere loud and lively to kip. Stayed there on my stag in 08 and a year later during a European banger rally.

Prague's great but wenceles sq is crap. Visit it by all means, but make plans to head into old town. And visit the big-ish 5 storey club next to the river, I forget its name, but it's suitably dark, cheap and populated buy a good variety of girls.

Some awesome "gentlemen's clubs" too. 15 euro entry with 10 free drinks in one. Great stuff :)

I stayed at hotel u divadla which is a bit out the way and 10 minute tram into the town. Cheap hotel, nice staff and also a supermarket nearby

I've stayed at The Golden Wheel on Nerudova (very near the castle) and Hotel Friday next to Wenceslas Sq. Friday was cheap, but just "ok". Not great service from the staff, really.

The Golden Wheel was a bit more expensive, but totally great staff -- though the beds weren't that good.

Make sure you pop into Café Bar Propaganda one night when you're there. It's awesome.

Last year we stayed in apartments in the centre about 3 mins walk from the main square. It cost bob all, 3 nights was about £40 PP in a 5 apartment.

I also went in 2005 and twice in 2006 and stayed in a different location, it was near a big marks and spencers on a main road - this cost even less, about £20 for 3 nights

Is Wenceslas Square a short work to the old town?

Less than 5 minutes away. The bottom of Wenceslas Square connects to the old town via a short street.

Whenever we went as a group you always got hassled by the guys trying to get you into strip clubs on WS though, so be prepared for that.

When we went a good few years ago now (probably like 10 to be honest) we stayed in The Steps, named because there was about a thousand of them that you needed to climb in order to get to the entrance.
Seriously this is not good after an all night session, One of my mates actually gave up about 1/2 way up the mountain and slept there for a few hours before finally climbing the rest.

I stayed in Hotel Atos, while it isn't the best hotel i've ever been to it's fine for dumping your bags and going for a wander, it was clean, safe and cheap and in a nice location, right near the hunger wall in Mala Strana. Breakfasts were a bit on the strange side there but for the price I wasn't going to complain.

Although you will get to hear awesome lines such as "Do you want to bang a midget?" Honestly, how often will you hear that?? :D

Hilton Old Town. Awesome hotel. They do a really good breakfast and the pool and sauna is a plus. It's not that expensive either. I think I paid about £85 a night.

I believe there was once a midget stripper in Prague. It's now become something of a legend because, well, who wouldn't want to see a midget stripper?

It's an empty promise though. The midget is a lie.

Mate ur gonna love it - find some backstreet pubs you will pay no more than a quid for a litre of the most crispy fresh pilsner you have ever drank!
Bloody love Prague. The castle is worth a visit, Staropramen factory is cool if ur into beer. There is also a sex museum and a torture museum which I guess are a must for lads holiday ;)
Restaurants Nostress and Noy are very good - also Casa Argentina is great fun for really good steak (they have a grand piano glued to the ceiling and have dancing and magic tricks going on all the time)

Also deffo check out Bar & Books for a late night cocktail or two.

If you wanna eat something Czechy - have a pork knuckle with all the trimmings (horseradish, pickles etc) - all washed down with yet more amazing beer. My sort of food!

Have fun!

You can stay pretty much anywhere to be honest - Prague is not a particularly large city and is easily explored on foot.

Yep deffo, me and the gf walked all around the centre within a couple of hours. Down through Wenceslas Square, old town square, over Charles bridge, across to the funicular railway up the cliff, then up the mini eiffel tower at the top, across to the castle, back down and up Parizska to old town square.

Lovely walk :)
