290X artefacting

Yo.

So I bought a second hand 290X (yes I know) and it's been pretty great.

I had some issues with installing my G10 Kraken and it's probably not mounted as good as it should be, so temps are about 60 degrees as opposed to the 45-50 I was expecting.

VRM temps range from anywhere between 95-107 when gaming, usually closer to 99 and I haven't put heatsinks on them yet since they are rated for about 125 to my knowledge and I'm not stressing them at all constantly.

Since yesterday (it's happened twice now) when I turn my screen on from having been off for a while, I get horrible artefacting across the whole screen on the desktop. Lines, green/purple and the image is jumping about the place. Will not go until I restart. When I restart, bam, gone, doesn't come back unless I switch my screen off and leave the system as far as I can tell.

I tried different display outputs, went from DP to HDMI (DisplayPort is pretty dodgy with AMD cards and my screen, I do tend to experience issues) and am now trying different power settings using AB (disabling ULPS and PowerPlay).

I'm on 14.6RC using Windows 8.1 64 and while I have overclocked in short bursts I run the card at stock most of the time. I have briefly increased the power limit to 50% (without heatsinks) but returned it soon after messing about.

I'm sure this was in a mining rig or something so I'm just hoping it isn't unstable because of its past or because of something I've done that's detrimental to the hardware.

At the moment I'm feeling this may be a software/settings issue since I'd expect to see it recurring fairly quickly when I'm just using the desktop, which I'm not. It only happens if I leave the system idle for an age with the screen off, then it starts to jib out.

I actually get similar effects for just a small amount of time when I start the PC and the graphics driver needs to sort itself out, it goes black and a few lines come down from the top for a split second before returning to normal.

Any help would be appreciated.

does it do it with a different monitor?

No idea, I would think so. Even if it didn't, wouldn't matter because I'm not going to replace my £500+ monitor. I wouldn't think it's broken and it hasn't happened before. If it was broken, it'd stop doing it when I turn the monitor off and back on, but it's the PC that has to be restarted for it to stop.

I would advise against using the card without proper VRM cooling as you'll kill the card.
There was a thread a while ago where a guy killed two 290s in a row trying to use an AIO on it.

Get some heatsinks on the VRMs and possibly ghetto a 120/140mm fan to blow over them.

Dayum.

Yeah, it's planned. What heatsinks are recommended for something like the G10? Once I know, I can order a whole bunch. Obviously, they need to be the right clearance. Really hope I don't have to glue them though >.<

I don't think that is the issue here though. Again, I've been using the system for quite a while now with 0 issues. Not playing games on the desktop, as I had been every time this had happened so the VRM is running cool.
