Where to buy a nice suit in the UK?

I need a new suit for a job interview I've got coming up. The plan is to spend somewhere between £250-£500 online, and then to get it tailored to fit afterwards. I was hoping to get something with a nice fabric (i.e., no man-made fibres) and at least half-canvassed (i.e., no fused/glued).

I know you can spend literally thousands on these things, but does anyone know where you can get a decent one for a bit less, maybe in a sale somewhere?

Probably the nicest one I've seen so far in that price range is one on Hugo Boss' website for £279 (reduced from £480), which comes in a 52R (my size), which is good because this size is hard to find elsewhere (although I might be able to get away with buying a 50R and having it taken out by an inch or two across the back). Then again, Hugo Boss suits might be rubbish for all I know.

I know places like M&S do some nice suits, but I was hoping to get something the next level up from that, if that makes sense.

I would suggest TM Lewin who sell suits for £200-350. Like all the specialist shirt shops they are very good quality and value for money in comparison to brands like Hugo Boss, where you'll be paying an extra couple hundred quid for the name, which no one can see anyway as it's a suit!

There's always 10-20% off voucher codes knocking around for TM Lewin so make sure you have a look around for one before you buy. They also do a generous cashback % from Quidco.

They would appears to do 52R jackets as well.

As you're in Birmingham pop into Slaters as well, I get great service from them every time I go in.

Asuitthatfits is good - they have shops as well to do the final touch ups.

If you want them dirt cheap, itailor is good, and the shipping is relatively cheap too - the cut isn't bad, it's not great but then you can get it tweaked.

Alternatively you can go into a shop and buy a suit with altering service for the price you've quoted.

Try to avoid ordering online from designers you're unfamiliar with as the sizes and cuts can be dramatically different. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere or are extremely time pressured, pop into some stores (high street/Debenhams/tailors) and try some suits on. It's much easier to make adjustments on a suit which largely fits already.

Charles Tyrwhitt are excellent in this price range. Try loads on, the cut is pretty important - you may want to give Moss and Austin Reed a try, they have large selections in store so you can see how they fit.

People say the most important thing is to make sure the shoulders fit right, because that's the only part that can't really be altered. But what does that mean? Are the shoulders out if you feel restricted across your back, or do they fit if the join on the suit shoulder lines up with the end of your own shoulder?
