3770K to 4790K, why?

Same with me. I have a 2600k @ 4.5Ghz with 16GB Ram. Also using a Samsung Evo 250GB along with a GTX 670.

I am going to wait to see what Skylake brings as I don't think Devils Canyon is a great deal better than what I already have.

It's quite sad that we're 3 years on from 2600k and still only just STARTING to see probably better chips.

The 4790k is basically a speed binned to 4.4ghz 4770k, same poor thermals but better overclock potential.

Well not really. DC is still a 22nm Haswell so heat build up is the same, but the TIM and heat spreader have been greatly improved, and according to some engineers and OCers at Asus you can't actually speed bin Haswell - the clock boosts have come from greatly improved thermals.

There's no way a standard 4770K could do 4.7GHz at 1.223V and stay below 65 degrees with the H105's fans at 55%. My 4790K does just that.

I agree im still using my trusty old i7 920 here and gaming wise i don't see a huge benefit from upgrading still now after all these years.

Waiting for something big in the cpu world to come along but it seems it never does :(

I think if you already have a 3770k, it is not worth the outlay for a 4790k. It would be much better upgrading to a x99 system when they are available.

+1 wait and see what the X99 chipset and the 6/8 core 5000 series CPU's have to offer. Even then I doubt it would be much of an upgrade for you from a 3770k.

I'm another i7-920 owner here and still struggling to find a reason to upgrade but I'm thinking the X99 release might give me that reason. That and I haven't bought a PC for 5 years and fancy some shiny new hardware to play with :D

Intel have hit a dead end with 4790k everything after the 3770k offers very little. If you need to upgrade I would wait for Haswell E and the x99 chipset.

Which is good compared to the late 90s, early 00. You buy a CPU now you get more years for your money, not 6 months.

I suppose this is true. It's just a shock to the system looking at new PC's and seeing that there isn't really anything out there more than double the speed of my current 5 year old CPU!
