780 Classy or 290x Vapor X?

Yep. The Step up program runs for 90 days though, so if something big comes out after that, you won't get that option.

The 290 Vapor X is voltage locked. You can give it up to +200 offset but it will force the voltage to stay just under 1.3v. Other 290s can go higher like the Lightning and the reference cards I believe though.

Also keep in mind if I were to go with AMD again, it would be the 290x Vapor X this time. Not the 290p

My Vapor-x (non x) that I bought recently goes past 1.3v when I put +200 offset.

Just did a run of Firestrike extreme clocked at 1225/1600 and the voltage was 1.352. It has been as high as 1.38.

I never ran that bench, but in Valley and Heaven it will go up to 1.35. Though vdroop will force it down to 1.29 most of the time.

I say it is locked because even putting +300mV offset on it yields the exact same amount of voltage as +200.

I would have thought if it was locked it would not go above 1.3v which it does. It goes as low as 1.25v from 1.35 in Valley for me but I don't think that kind of vdroop is because it is locked.

+200mv is 1.4v and the stock limit, +300mv is 1.5v and for extreme overclocking, you may have to use the other BOIS for that to stick.

I also benched mine at 1225Mhz @ 1.35v and 1.4v, I have run it as high as 1270Mhz on 1.4v but bottled it before the bench could complete, I'm a bit chicken like that, if I start to see artefacts at high clocks I go for the escape key.
Probably why I have never had a GPU die on me.

It seem's that the highest I have seen it go was not 1.38 but 1.367. When you put an offset of +200 the Vapor-x seems to report 1.352 as the highest voltage. Manually put a offset of +250 using a bat file for Afterburner and the voltage will go to 1.367.

Put an offset of any higher and it will still remain at 1.367 as it's highest volts.

The Vapor X is definitely locked. I know other 290s can go higher.

Like I said, the voltage will not change at all going from +200 to +300mV offset. It will still start out at around 1.35ish and then drop down to around 1.29v and occasionally back up to around 1.32v.

I forced the voltage up to 1.375v while on desktop, but as soon as you go into a game or benchmark its forced down to 1.29 again.

Also I to always hit escape as soon as I see even a flicker of an artifact while testing stability. The card just simply had issues from the beginning prior to doing any overclocking.

My other AMD cards went bad on me right away too and those I never even messed with. So nothing on my end caused damage. Just faulty products from AMD.

I think the Tri-x is not locked but if you have had various Amd cards going faulty you would be better going Nvidia. I have had no problems with my Msi 290 or Vapor-x or 4850 or 5850 before that. I find it strange certain people have such trouble with Amd cards.

Oh I know! You would think I would learn my lesson? My friends that only use Nvidia laugh at me because I keep giving them a chance.

I do not know why I still like them even though I never got anything good from them lol! :D

Really? You must have an immense card then because I'm 2000 points off the Heaven score I got with my classy, unless you mean at stock.

Use a bench that doesn't heavily favour Nvidia cards.
And are you sure you were 2000 off? :p

Because yours was ****. If you'd have flashed the bios and allowed it some extra voltage you'd probably got a lot more out of it.

????? I did do that, I had it at 1.3v

Plus I don't like that it runs at constant voltage, so I wouldn't have used the extra volts 24/7.

I personally think Nvidia cards are a rip off and would only suggest them if they have went through various Amd cards and they have become faulty.

I have never found Amd cards inferior to Nvidia cards and they have always offered better value for me with just as good build quality.

Well the Vapor 290x is same exact price as the Classy where I'll be buying from. So not really spending more.

I would be more than happy to get another Vapor if I knew it would actually work lol. I just don't know if its worth chancing it. Seems the odds are not in my favor that route. :D

Plus the high overclocking you can get from a Classy sounds nice.
