Absurd amount of compensation

what they should do is stop them adding stuff to cigarettes to make them more addictive and to burn easier.

don't they also add chemicals so the nicotines takes effect quicker?

Yes, it is a crazy amount of money, but the cigarette companies have always been utter crooks so who the Hell cares?

There will be appeal upon appeal until someone, a judge with interests in RJ Reynolds, sees sense.

where's the proof that it was their cigarettes that caused the cancer? I used to smoke and didn't always stick to one brand so I'm sure somewhere along his life he's been smoking cigarettes by a different company. you can get cancer from second hand smoke so I'm sure he could have got it from one pack.

It's sensible. Not point fining a company 1million, when they wouldn't even notice it. It is UK who has it wrong. Punitive charges in such case are needed. It will be lowered,p to a point that will hurt the company but not make them go bust.

And no it won't set a precedent as that happened years ago. all smokers family have to prove, is that they were addicted and their death/illness was caused by smoking. as tobacco companies have already been found guilty of lying and misinformation.

I know its pretty much only recently our cigarettes have the horrendous photos on them but I was sure they always havd something along the lines of "smoking damages health" on them.

Or has that never been the case in the states?
Are we now gonna see a huge amount of cases where peopl have died thru cancer or any other form of disease brought on bt smoking and even drinking

That was never the case in any country. They lied for decades, even the written health warnings is relatively new. 1971 in UK. US was the first to introduce health warnings 66-70, but this still leaves decades of lying.

You will see just as many as has already been seen. This is not the first case in the slightest. It's simply the highest reward that will be revised down.
Punitive charge is meant to hurt the company, but not make them go out of business.

How about all the families who have also lost loved ones with the high probability of smoking being the cause?

It's a joke, only in "MURICA".

Whys it a joke? Tobacco companies knowingly lied for decades.
And what about them, they can set up claims as well, always have been able two. they need to prove just two points. They were addicted and their illness/death was caused by smoking.

How do you value a human life?

The sooner the tobacco industry is shut down the better IMO so I hope the appeal is dismissed.

I read the story, it would appear that she is getting just under 10million, in damages. The rest of the entire 23 billion appears to be a fine directly on the company. So one would assume the government collect that.
Is this correct?

Nope she gets that. It's to encourage people to bring lawsuits forward. As they costs so much to bring forward it's a good incentive.
